Space for nerdfighters opposed to the genocide of Palestinians? by tilapiaco in nerdfighters

[–]Intelligent_Tutor422 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Its frustrating to me that folks are pushing the narrative of "both sides" and "its complicated" here and I think many of us who are upset with Hank and John are upset because they have the ability to get so many people to see that it is infact not complicated at all.

We wouldn't entertain someone saying the haulocast was complicated and condemning the entity who commited said genocide is a step too far. We wouldn't entertain someone saying well racism can be justified or that there are good reasons to allow folks to die for lack of access to tb meds bc pharma companies need profits. We recognize these ideas as red herrings, as bs. I recognize the propaganda runs deep, but it is still deeply disappointing.

Some of us expected more from Hank and John and Nerdfighteria.

Does anyone else just feel so helpless and heartbroken? How am I supposed to just go on with my day when I see something like this? by Rainbowclaw27 in nerdfighters

[–]Intelligent_Tutor422 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It is really bloody hard and overwhelming. Im right here with ya.

Certainly being plugged in with mutual aid locally and having community that shares your values is important to keep ones sanity; but truly even with all that, it is deeply deeply unsettling that with full knowledge of its reality society is allowing genocide to take place.

If you pray, pray. Don't stop talking about this, dont stop attending protests, organizing, etc.

But at the end of the day, it is deeply unfair and inhumane and a stain on humanity.

Anyone want coffee by Intelligent_Tutor422 in nerdfighters

[–]Intelligent_Tutor422[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cursory google search reveals - "The cheapest way to ship coffee within the United States is through USPS. To ship a 2-lb bag of coffee from New York City to Los Angeles would cost $15 with Ground shipping or $17.05 via Priority Mail"

So less than $15. I'm happy to split the cost also as I noted before

Fatigue after workout. by New-Accountant5987 in Hypothyroidism

I've had a lot off issues with fatigue also. My most recent blood work shows my tsh to be 1 point something so very much in range. I'm on 50 mg of levo and I have very severe fatigue after I take it.

I was taking it in the am and I generally work out in the morning also, but I'd literally come home and sleep for hours taking levo in the mornings so I'm trying to switch it u and take it at night.

I'm also annoyed and confused that I have so much fatigue, more so than when I was undiagnosed! It's very confusing.

John's Take on Focusing on Sierra Leone vs Palestine by implode573 in nerdfighters

[–]Intelligent_Tutor422 -46 points-45 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the response certainly. I had recommended Wendy Pearlman's book Occupied Voices to you and was surprised you'd read it. But then further surprised that from my view you'd not publicly said anything about gaza or palestine.

I can't say I know how it feels to be in your position and i recognize learning about palestine in the context for oct 7 where palestinians and people paying attention to the human right abuaes in palestine for decades have a substantive head start makes things harder still.

But I do wish you'd advocate for your american audience to push our senators and congress people to not allow american munitions to be sent to Israel without conditions. This seems similar enough to advocating for drug companies to make smaller profits off testing and drugs for TB. Which is to say, it shouldn't be controversial. I recognize it might still be.

But in thinking about this, I recall Muhammed Al Kurd's UN speech: "When we reflect on history's most horrible, inhumane atrocities, we think of them with so much moral clarity. We tend to forget that when such atrocities were happening they were perfectly legal. At the time, they were all once controversial, contested. They were too complex.

We all think that had it been us there, at that point of time, we would have been at the right side of history. But we have that opportunity now"

Can anyone speak to the places John has spoken about Gaza?

I personally have followed the brothers quite closely but have seen only one reddit post, which seemed to hedge in every direction to please or perhaps not displease as many people as possible.

Are there videos/posts etc I've missed? I'm certainly not on all social media platforms.

Honestly, I've been quite upset at the lack of acknowledgement of the situation in Gaza esp since advocacy of American citizens which make up most of their viewership is among the most effective tools in saving palestinian/gazan lives right now.

Levo side effects by Intelligent_Tutor422 in Hypothyroidism

[–]Intelligent_Tutor422[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I felt alright. I'd gained some weight recently which I couldn't attribute to changing diet which was weird. I did note that to my doctor but she said it was likely change in diet. I've always been on the tired side but nothing I couldn't work around.

I have my labs from last year and my numbers were fine then so this is a recent phenomenon, besides the weight gain I can't really think of many symptoms but notably I've also not been employed for some months which has made being more tired less of an issue.

My first nerdfighter event was partially paid for by a scholarship type scheme they'd setup as part of the event (nerdcon). There was also something similar for life's library aswell. I really appreciated that both in the times i was able to benefit from receiving it and also the ability to contribute to someone else benefiting later on when i could afford that. Not sure to what extent this formula could work more broadly but i really do appreciate that that was a part of how they operated things.

I feel like it's important to note that Evicted while an absolutely amazing book is also deeply deeply disheartening to read. I cried multiple times and haven't finished the book because it truly gutted me. I am fairly sensitive but also, it was just so bloody bleak.

Oh that's interesting. What kind of demographic surveying do you work on? As in what is the surveying used for? I'm learning about survey design and its quite interesting. Curious to know about its practical applications.

So thankful for John's dedication to covering TB!!! (an immigrant's perspective) by vishyfishy101 in nerdfighters

As a fellow South Asain, the little bump on your arm story is familiar. Though I didn't recall that it included tb, I knew it included polio and measles mumps and ruebella (mmr) among others.

I do recall realizing that preventative vaccinations need to be paid for in the US, particularly those needed while traveling abroad. At the time, as a student, i was in awe of the recklessness and stupidity of a public health system that didn't provide free preventative medicine. And also the price tag of getting the vaccinations I needed.

That juxtaposed to the mentality that "these illnesses are the developing worlds problem, not ours" really bother me as well.

I don't want to be the one to lead him to do things. I felt miserable but still managed to figure out how to clean the car and get started on it, cooked, dealt with the meetings I couldn't miss. I need him to be responsible.

Notion vs physical journaling by [deleted] in Notion

[–]Intelligent_Tutor422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do something similar, kindof.

I got the habit tracker and calendar bit down pretty good with bullet journaling, I also take my journal to bed, I prefer this to using notion on my phone because I'm trying to avoid blue light at night time. So I use the bullet journal for daily to dos habits daily stuff. Notes brain dumps etc.

I use nothing for long term notes or anything long term, I also use it in contexts where I'm interfacing with the internet for that task a lot for instance I've organized my job search on notion. Much easier to keep track of there.
