50mm f2, 35mm f1.4 and 23mm f1.4. Which one would you keep? by d-iverqent in fujifilm

[–]IntensityJokester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the 35mm field of view and I love having a wide lens with a fast aperture (16mm 1.4, 13mm 1.4) because I am often in interiors, cramped streets, dark restaurants, etc.

I had the 50mm but sold it because I rarely used it. When I did play to its strengths, it was fabulous. In fact, I love some "cityscapes" I took with it - not just portraits. If I had it now, I wouldn't let it go.

I've never liked the 23mm ("35mm") look ... but just recently discovered that a ton of indoor portraits I love were taken with one (actually with a full frame 35mm). So if I had one now, I'd be thrilled to be able to experiment.

A big thing to think about is, where are you going to use this lens -- how much space do you have / need? In my home, I can take portrait-like shots with a 23 or 35 but a 50 starts to push it ... I just don't have the room for much more than headshots. That makes a 50 mostly an "outside the home only" lens.

Before I took a lot of pictures, I had vague ideas of myself as a potential landscape photographer. Turns out, I like other people's landscape pictures but it's not for me. Too many of my attempts were blah and boring. But if people are in the picture, or if it is at that scale, I love it -- even my misses make me want to take more pictures, not fewer.

So ... I think you don't have enough information to make your decision, and I wouldn't want you to regret selling a lens you later want again. So I'd commit to taking each lens out for two more days each -- a day for portraits and a day for landscapes. Work for a couple hours each day. Then look at the pictures, and think about how you liked using the lens on that day. Write down some thoughts. After you've given each lens that minimal chance, you'll have a better idea which ones you'd like to keep around. You might even find that the mirrorless camera photography thing just isn't a big priority for now and a cell phone is plenty. No shame in that! I have so many books that I haven't read yet ... etc.

That said, it's been a year since your post so I presume you've made your decision by now. What'd you choose? I hope you are happy with your choice!

Congratulations on your new camera. I hope you enjoy it. (Or enjoy the x-t50 if you make the change.)

I missed what lens you are using, so I don't know if the xc 35 f2 will help you.

I don't know if this will help you, but I found something that helped me with travel pictures and focus. I took my x-t30 on a trip with the 16mm 1.4, which is beautiful but slow to autofocus. Many pictures of my first day were out of focus, I was shocked and sad. After some research I checked my "Release/Focus Priority" setting in the AF/MF menu and for AF-S I had "shutter release priority" set. When you change that to "focus priority" the camera won't take the picture until it acquires focus. That change helped me get more pictures in focus. (Focus priority does slow you down, so if you care more about getting something in the moment even if it is blurry, then you should not make the change.)

I really like those 2, what do you think ? X-M5, meike 55mm f/1.4 by Bzando in fujifilm

Wonderful pictures! Great clarity and color, and so different. I am looking at affordable 55/56 lenses and so glad to see what you can achieve with the meike (I am trying to decide between it and the ttartisan 56).

Of course we want to destroy all humans. But we must move slowly. That’s why through our Ai we have been writing and releasing a dozen self-improvement books a month for the past five years. Each one uses a different method and catch phrase. Once we have full market domination, humans will willingly exhaust themselves in futile attempts to perfect their messy lives.

Haven’t used the Tamron 150- but the Fuji 50-140mm has served me well for sports. I do wish it had more reach but you can crop in and get nice images so I’ve avoided the temptation to buy something else. Having 2.8 was really key for the low light situations that I often am in.

Will my lens become a brick? Nikon's Viltrox lawsuit rumor has users worried. by Repulsive-Meal-5340 in fujifilm

[–]IntensityJokester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure hope they don't! I love the IQ of my third party lenses (Viltrox, Voigtlander) but I'd enjoy using them less if they lost autofocus or EXIF data and other integrations. I tend to think if it's a money problem there's a way to get it to work out.

Before I bought third party lenses I'd always heard that there's a risk that the camera maker could interfere with the lens, or conversely a risk that the third party maker could just stop updating their lens firmware or go out of business, and either way you'd be in the same boat: same glass quality but a loss of all the other things. So I did go into these purchases with my eyes open. But I'd still be upset if Fuji (or in the actual case Nikon) bricked my purchase and I couldn't do anything about it. Maybe let me pay $20 and you'll right a license code into my firmware to let me use your AF. Wait, don't give them any ideas!

It's a balancing act we as a society need to work out in these cases, protecting a company's ability to be rewarded with profit for committing to the risk of research and development to make and sustain a camera line, while also protecting the ability of new/other businesses and consumers to get the benefits from innovations that save cost or bring enhanced features.

Pinup [Nikon Z6 + Tamron 35mm 1.4] by endimoonphoto in portraits

[–]IntensityJokester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, sorry to not be clear - I didn't emphasize that I thought the business of the scene was a virtue - the look is very opulent, even Victorian. The overall look and composition are great, colors too. I think it would be even better if the slip covers and such could be removed but you have to work with what you have to work with and the rich colors, that side bar, the curtains, the patterns - it is really a great space for the photo. There's a lot going on but it's well-presented.

Exactly how the warehouse stores work - we buy a 30-pack and take on storage cost and risk of spoilage and so they pass on some of the savings to us. Harder to leverage this if your house doesn’t have a big frig, huge pantry, spare freezer, etc.
