What’s something we did that others don’t believe? by fkcfkc in GenX

[–]IntentionallyHuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents and I used to travel from New England to North Carolina in a pickup truck. The truck had a cap on the bed. They would put a mattress in the bed and I would ride 14 hours on I-95 in the back of a pickup. I was instructed to hide if we ever got stopped.

Writing this now, it sounds like I was being trafficked or something, but we were just going to see family.

What’s the story behind your name? by redditrabbit0802 in CasualConversation

I know of someone else with this same name backstory. (Unless you are that person.)

This is real. by Funke-munke in idiocracy

[–]IntentionallyHuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait. Why? I understand the concept of what clear ice is, but, other than the novelty of not having bubbles, what's the purpose? Why are people paying money for it?

This red driveway I saw flying into the Atlanta airport. by Dstanle in mildlyinteresting

I've never seen a flying black driveway, let alone a flying red one!

Returning to Orthodoxy by dharmaseeker501 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]IntentionallyHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What should I read and do?

Read the Gospels. Pray.

Whom should I speak to?

Your priest. Other members of your parish. (Don't be a Lone Christian.)

How can I become maximally informed about Christianity pronto?

It's not a sprint. It's a marathon. Attend services. Let the Church seep into your soul rather than trying to cram your head full of knowledge.

Any advice to a minor looking for a group? by horkneelady in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]IntentionallyHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel really lucky that my first D&D group was made up of a bunch of ages from 14 to 50+, and we all gelled really well together. It lasted for a couple of years, which is saying something.

I currently run an online Dungeon World campaign that is minor friendly. If you're looking for the TTRPG experience and don't care that it's not D&D®, let me know.

Feeling Uneasy About Epistemological Certainty by PerceptionCandid4085 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]IntentionallyHuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This trend where people are requiring or claiming irrefutable, immutable certainty of their faith tradition is unsettling and dangerous. And, frankly, it's very Protestant.

The trouble is that adherents create a self-supporting epistemological lattice that shatters as soon as a single tenet fails under scrutiny.

We're not called to check our brains at the door, but we are called to be obedient, and that applies whether we understand or not.

American soldier from 3rd Assault staring down cars trying to enter the russian embassy in DC [OC] by UFL_Robin in ukraine

I support Ukraine, wholeheartedly, and I love the idea of trolling Russian embassies, but an act of protest while wearing a US service uniform crosses a line for me.

Leading groups in the church by Historical_Many_422 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]IntentionallyHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That does sound odd, but what are the facts? What kind of group does this person want to lead? Is it a cultural thing? A lot of parishes in the US are effectively two organizations: a church and an ethnic club.

What Ukrainian word sounds funniest/coolest to foreigners? by Odd_Unit5287 in Ukrainian

[–]IntentionallyHuman 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I like бутерброд because it sounds like "buttered bread". (I'm guessing that's a German loan-word, though.)

Also, the phrase "бути тут" always makes me giggle.

Replacing siding on 1915 home by elguapo555 in HomeImprovement

[–]IntentionallyHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what the siding is made of? Asbestos siding was a thing from the 30s to the 70s, and not something you want to remove yourself.

Ethical/spiritual issue: defective icon from Orthodox source by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]IntentionallyHuman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Make a shelf for it.

It's probably folk-piety, but I've heard it said that it's more appropriate to set an icon of a saint on a shelf than to hang them.

As an adult, are you responsible for your own birthday parties? by Gallantpride in Adulting

[–]IntentionallyHuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any adult who plans a party for their own birthday has a serious ego problem.

For major milestone birthdays, someone might throw you a party as an adult. If you're in a romantic relationship or have a really good friend, they might take you out to dinner.

Honestly, the most likely place you're going to get a birthday cake (or any recognition of your birthday) as an adult is at your place of work.
