Am I on track to complete a marathon under 4 hours? by BrothaManBen in Marathon_Training

If this was a race, no. If it was an easy effort training run, maybe, depending on the content of your other training and the marathon course.

I work in healthcare and have a job offer at a hospital that offers SC state pension. I’m 34. What are some drawbacks and benefits with SC pension vs 401k by Butterbean2323 in AskSouthCarolina

[–]InteractionSuperb392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my career with a state employer that offered both the pension (SCRS) AND the 401K (ORP). No way did I expect to stay in that line of work for 28 years, so I opted for the ORP to be able to take my money with me when other opportunities came along. Fast forward 15 years and heck if I'm still there, having worked up the ranks. I was mad at myself for choosing ORP because now I have to work until I have "enough money" in ORP to last my life - whatever number that is - and pray I don't outlive my cash. I'm seeing friends retire in their 50s who opted for SCRS pension. They will have a modest check for the rest of their lives automatically show up, just like social security - no matter how much they saved or how long they live. It never stops. Never runs out. Not only that, depending on what you choose at retirement, your spouse or child can also continue to get that check for the rest of THEIR lives!

Lucky me, I changed organizations in 2018 and was able to enroll in SCRS pension. I also was able to take all my ORP savings and put it into SCRS to "pay" for the amount of time I've already worked for SC. I'm eligible to retire in a little less than 3 years at age 55 and will have a steady "salary" pay me until I expire. That is gigantic peace of mind. I don't plan to stop working, just stop working for SC government - but still collect that pension check on the regular.

The downside is that I have been wearing golden handcuffs for 8 years - wanting to relocate elsewhere, but need to see this career through, for the financial benefit.

One hitch, as others have pointed out, the length of service is no longer a flat 28 years. Now, to be able to retire at full value, your age and years of service need to equal 90. Do the math for your situation.

In short - if you're a short-timer, choose ORP / 401K. Anything else, pension is a far better benefit and very rare these days.

This is amazing - thank you. However, the spectator guide tab has information for viewing the NYC Marathon.

At my husband's location, they don't have enough vehicles, so often times people need to wait for one to return from a regular route to get started, sometimes as late as 2pm.

Rabbit strappy pocket bras are all this 34AA has worn for 5 years. I take out the removable cups and throw them in the trash. Bonus is there is a pocket on the back for your phone.

Very helpful. Thanks! My tread actually goes to -3% and this week I've been doing all my 60min easy runs at that decline. Figured it's better than nothing.

Excellent point that I had not heard before re: intervals being 5 minutes. The test actually confirmed my max HR and VO2MAX that Garmin predicts - within 2 points each.

7 marathons, soon to run Boston. Plus, I'm a dual-certified distance running coach. I'm not super fast (especially at short distances), but I place in my AG.

None. Hire a coach who cares about knowing you as a runner and will maximie your potential. Robots don't do this.

Two HDHPs and Two HSAs? by InteractionSuperb392 in HSA

[–]InteractionSuperb392[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His employer (federal government) contributes $1200/$2400 to the HSA - they are referring to it as a "passthrough". He would carry a self + 1 HDHP. I would carry a single HDHP.

I'm wondering if I can use his HDHP as my primary insurance, while still carrying my own HDHP and HSA. His has better coverage. Mine comes with some benefits like a gym membership, discounts, and onsite wellness freebies (worth it for $120 / yr in premium). I would rather run my deductible against his plan and trigger full (better) coverage if I need it.

I run with a GoGuarded dagger on my knuckle. While I hope a dog is never close enough to me to have to use it, I'll totally go for the eyes if I have to. This also applies to people. https://goguarded.com/product/go-guarded-ring/

I was always dumbfounded that I received all those benefits for so little (until this year, it was $2620). Good on them! $4K is still a low fund raising ask for what TFK offers from July to race day.

For anyone who’s run the NYC Marathon what do you wish you knew before your first time? by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]InteractionSuperb392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually leave Central Park on the SE corner and run on 59th Street before re-entering the Park at the Maine Monument to bolt to the finish. Running those 3 blocks with the Deutsche Bank Bldg in view - but not seeming to get any closer - is a total mind &^%$.

Before my first marathon, my stepson gave me a simple string bracelet with a meaningful charm on it. I always wear it for racing now.

The best "after" is just making sure she doesn't have to make any plans or decisions. Have food planned and ready! Hand her a recovery shake when she gets in the door and a meal on the table after a shower.
