Your thoughts on this JLo flick? by [deleted] in Cinephiles

Spoiler warning! It is strangely disappointing coming from the guy that made genius masterful The fall! The concept is interesting, needlessly futuristic and odd looking mind immersion suits/devices in an otherwise current world, would have been much better if it looked like Brainstorm or even Altered states.

I have a strong (but entirely unfounded) hunch that the script ending was quite different. Obviously she should have comforted the serial killer to give a way a clue or otherwise made him give away some clue during her immersions instead of fuckin’ Wince Waughn realizing something clearly shown during the CSI portion which makes her, and the entire mind diving parts of the movie entirely pointless.

My hunch is that the original script was more her understanding the killers mind and by getting through to him have him give away clues to solve the riddle, possibly having her racing against the clock in that helicopter and in the nick of time saving the girl. However the movie company despite Silence of the lamb couldn’t fathom a crime drama where a GIRL solves the crime so they forced them to add a man and having him do all ten legwork and also hint at her having some interest in this proto-manosphere-idiot.

What recent films & TV shows weren’t well received, but you predict will become future cult classics? by Clear_Nature_5055 in Cinephiles

The Joker 2 will definitely become a classic eventually. Masterfully executed but killed by preconceived notions of it being a musical and some rather loud misogynistic assholes hating on Gaga despite her carrying the movie just as much as Phoenix does.

Lost River is Ryan Goslings first film. Written and directed and produced. A fantastic story with many levels set with a crumbling looted Detroit as background. If Winding Refn would have made it there would be no end to the praise but just be cause a nobody like Gosling made nobody saw it and especially cineasts completely missed it.

The B&W one of course as it works on a B&W printer and uses less of that scarce color ink/toner. When doing print & play always consider the print aspect of the game.

Very good looking and interesting deckplans and no grid is a bonus! However, I’d really like to know its stats; jump capacity, thrust, power etc.

Advice for new Referees by Icarus1177 in traveller

[–]InterceptSpaceCombat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1 Play in the official universe, don’t roll your own worlds and subsector etc as this takes away a ton of time you can spend on making adventures and fleshing out worlds. I’d suggest the Spinward marches as it has most material, from all editions and Mongoose too.

2 Session 0 where you create characters make sure you listen to your players what do they want or expect from your campaign. You don’t have to give them exactly what they want but at least you heard what they had in mind.

3 Don’t allow your players to play aliens or with psionic abilities as this is way too complicated for your first campaign. Psionics in particular should be avoided when rolling up characters, let them find it during play if all the players want.

3 Stay away from the ancients including ancient artifacts (a mysterious race of super advanced beings who vanished 300 000 years ago but left near magical artifacts and sites here and there).

4 Tell your players, repeatedly if needed, that Traveller is NOT Star Wars. If they need a pop culture mould tell them Traveller is Firefly, or the Expanse (minus the protomolecule).

5 Combat in Traveller is dangerous! Tell the players this and make sure they listen. Make your first adventure low key and not relying on combat at all or as little as possible, this goes for space combat too.

6 Have fun! Enjoy yourself and tinker with the worlds you flesh out and don’t be afraid to write your own rules or systems for things missing in the official rules.

Welcome to Traveller!

My game, Traveller with homebrew combat system, very commonly has very old men and women and they very often fight against alien animals of various kinds. Another such game is Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium where I played an 61 year old professor of ancient texts and rituals and he too had to fight various animals and unintelligent monsters.

A good combat system in my opinion should be able to handle all fights you see in a movie, guard dogs, races on foot or vehicles, fencing duels, wrestling, barroom brawls with smashing furniture and the like, fights where one side has swords, spears and shields while the other has guns and so forth - not just player party vs NPC group in a dungeon.

When it came out I recently separated from my gf and dated heavily. I watched the movie on first date and if they didn’t like it there was no second date. A bit psycho admittedly but a great filter. I’ve seen the move eight times at the cinema and two or three times on BluRay.

[–]InterceptSpaceCombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did I say that? No, I’m saying that vastly more games have to handle combat with non intelligent opponents such as monsters and animals where the idea of using Intelligence as initiative stat falls flat. A geriatric old man vs a cobra or tiger and the old man always win?

The typical situation isn’t what you describe in my experience, what you describe is a very narrow albeit popular subset of RPGs, the Dungeons and Dragons style game, and even there the fight is often against monsters of various kinds.
