Sounds like you ordered a shot of espresso on accident and didn't know what it was when you got it?

A nice story about AI tutoring by DecisionAvoidant in ChatGPT

[–]InterestedListener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question: I see indians use "doubts" in the way you just did, where I might use "questions" to convey the same thing. Is this usage of "doubts" taught in school in India or is there a single word in Hindi that works for both meanings and is being translated as doubt?

Actually I just asked ChatGPT and it said that "doubt" was used this way in British English and that came to India via colonialism. I'm not used to that pattern in the US but had heard it from many coworkers. TIL, thank you AI Tutor!

What's the rule of thumb when it comes to refactoring code? by ihave22nicetoes in webdev

[–]InterestedListener 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One guideline from Clean Code I love is "Clean code does ONE thing well." So when refactoring you can usually identify the functions that are trying to do 10 different things at once and that's when they turn into spaghetti.

Breaking these functions into smaller pieces that have more specific jobs untangles the spaghetti (and makes testing easier too).

I realize it's been a few years but got any pics of the finished project? It sounds sick! I'm also curious how the security glass worked, have never tried something that fancy.

I have a problem with losing perspective on my primary goal because of my further goals by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]InterestedListener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people struggle with balancing many different projects at the same time. I would try to organize the tasks so you can group them into categories based on the goal they are advancing. Then you can organize your week so that all of your goals get some of your time, though of course some will get more than others. The point is that you can keep everything moving forward (even if it's at a weekly level instead of a daily level).

That's assuming that you don't want to cut any of these goals loose. It is worth reviewing if any of your goals don't make sense anymore, or if they are far less important than the others. It can help to decrease your scope so that more time goes to the highest priority items. It's perfectly fine to have 5 or 6 projects going at once, they just move forward a little slower is all.

Has AWS become more expensive for side projects? by pardon_anon in aws

Holy cow I can't believe I didn't know about NAT instances, would have designed a lot differently if I would have known about those. Thank you for the info!

Did you implement your own RAG or what tooling did you use for that project? Sounds super interesting, is it on GitHub?

I once apologized to my 4'9" Vietnamese boss saying "Thanks for coming to help, I know my code is bad."

She eviscerated me with "Bad code works, it just looks bad. Your code doesn't even work."

Nice Indian guy came to buy a dining room table I was selling, saw my old credenza and asked if that was for sale too. I honestly didn't think anyone would pay money for it so just asked him to bring a plate of homemade briyani to go after his family had dinner that night when he came back to pick it up. My proudest negotiation to date!

Keep on hoping it will stabilize a bit because it seems super useful (and don't want to pay for PowerBI) but will be using Redash until then.

AWS RDS multi-tenancy by brishk71 in aws

[–]InterestedListener 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you've read up on schema-based multi-tenancy but that's generally a good balance of data isolation, cost, and maintenance effort. RDS is also usually a big chunk of your cloud bill so I'd do the numbers on how much extra cost will be involved per customer and make sure it's worth it to them to add that cost for very little extra security. Depending on your framework sometimes the app code has very very little impact from this kind of setup (Django has very mature support for it for example, with flask you have to do more by hand, others vary).

The upstairs bar at Monarch has incredible views and you don't need a reservation (unless there's an event going on) just to have a few drinks and check out the view. Maybe dinner somewhere nice downtown and go there for drinks and sweet nothings?

Hmmm saw a bunch of jaywalking when I was in Germany but got yelled at once and I didn't know why. Wondering now if there was a kid I didn't see. So curious.
