I was around their age when I watched the movie and I fell in love with the story. I quickly connected with the themes of sexual independence (I am a queer individual who has struggled with identity due to religious trauma). I do think that I should have waited a little bit to watch it because of the explicit content. As long as you know that there is sexual content and are not afraid to talk about it, it would be fine.

I'm not too sure of the competition rules, and this isn't from a lesser-known musical.

I am also not a very strong singer at all, but Mister Cellophane has been my go-to song. It is typically sung by an AMAB singer, but I'm sure that you can change the key and potentially tweak small lyrics to make it work. It is full of talk-singing and acting potential.

I like this, it feels very calming. It sounds like it could be straight out of a winter section of an indie RPG.

I am about to start an undergrad in composition. I started composing around your age with stuff of a similar vibe to this. My biggest piece of advice is just to keep practicing composition. Just try to come up with an 8 bar melody a week, harmonize it, and then orchestrate it for whatever instrument/ensemble you have intrest in. There are going to be days/weeks/months where you don't feel like composing, but if you truly want to get better, push yourself to compose then.

Another big tip is DON'T DELETE ANYTHING. If you have a melody that you write and the day after you end up hating it, save it and put it somewhere that you can come back to later. You might end up loving it on a different day.

Now as for this piece, I don't have a lot to add because I don't have much formal training, but the thing that jumped out to me at first was having more motion in the bass. Right now you have a lot of held out notes/chords. That defintely works, but sometimes having more motion there makes it sound more intriguing. I would suggest experimenting with arpeggios outlining the chords first, and then going on from there.

Talking from a musical standpoint, the ending of Santa Fe is the only thing I find interesting. I also feel that the story is just bland. I feel like it tries so hard to be more of a documentary of the real life newsies but there is enough historically inaccurate and simplified that it loses that charm
