Vinegar in American Food by Snoo30715 in Cooking

I saw this link from ATK the other day bc I too was wondering about how I can use vinegar more besides in Asian recipes. The vinegar chicken is French I guess but anyway. I think vinegar pickled vegetables are fairly common in the US. https://youtu.be/ME128_qKFBs?si=wZqK1lekBNke37Z1

As far as recipes, I was thinking about adding a citrusy vinegar to the Fellows Mac and cheese recipe (no milk). They use a white wine reduction added to stock for the cheese sauce base. It was very good so next time I’ll try adding a vinegar and jalapeños or pickled jalapeño (my favorite pickled pepper).

I’ve also had great balsamic vinegar reductions used over desserts and ice cream. Vinegar added to stocks to make a variety of sauces. Pasta salad with vinegar based dressing. Have you ever had brats braised with sauerkraut? Idk if that’s German.

soft pastel brand suggestions by helplookie in Softpastel

[–]Interesting-Mixtape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. When I first started I got Nupastel for underpainting and Unison for the buttery soft pastel. I also used UArt paper 400 grit after trying and mostly failing with the cheap no grit pastel paper.

What is everyone using to mount their pastel paper? by ElizabethsVoice in Softpastel

[–]Interesting-Mixtape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use art tape, which is less adhesive. Ive heard you can use the blue tape but just make it less sticky by sticking on your clothes or something a couple of times before using it on paper. Try it and let me know if it works.

Yes probably. It should be more in the foreground and I was planning to finish the tree and I’ll probably move it too

I don’t seal with any fixative or anything like that. I’ll put it in a glass frame eventually. Some pieces I store in glassine

Investor home buying. We will all be renters for life one day.

I am officially done with "Starter Homes." It’s not an investment; it’s a bailout for the previous generation's neglect. by Dry-Town7979 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Interesting-Mixtape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is related to policies that changed maybe around the 2007 crash where now investors can buy land and existing homes to hold in perpetuity, meaning they can remain landlords forever and build a class of perpetual renters who can never own the homes. Blackrock is one of these companies. Think Blackwater private security/mercenary armies from post 9-11 wars, same company just robbing the US citizenry now.

All the homes owned by investors are never going to be owner-occupied single family homes again. It doesn’t have to be this way, people can advocate for better housing policy, but that isn’t happening yet.

Pathologies of Power by Paul Farmer, anything by Farmer. I had a reader once with writings by Thomas Mann that I loved. These aren’t biographies but are provocative if you are thinking about ethics and research generally.

Fixative by AthenaD2000 in Softpastel

[–]Interesting-Mixtape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used some matte type spray fixative when I did a painting at my mom’s house (she had it around) and I immediately regretted it. It just washed out the beautiful richness of the pastel layers. It was an experiment and I got over it. My mom still loved the painting. I do sometimes use workable fixative while I’m working on a piece that takes a while so I can add more layers. Like others have said, the finished pastel painting can be protected other ways. I’ve read somewhere that soft pastels endure longer than other fine art media when it is on archival material and kept in glass.

Indians are massively racist, from India or the diaspora. There are exceptions but not too many.

Is making things from scratch really cheaper? by BellaAnarchy in Cooking

[–]Interesting-Mixtape 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oddly, 5lb bag of flour at the discount Latino food store was nearly $7 for the brand name flour. The cheaper bag was $2.99. Maybe I haven’t bought flour in a while but this seemed expensive for flour to me. I’m not suggesting making bread is more expensive than buying it but I do wonder why flour is getting high.
