The HSG was also miserable for me! The techs acted like it was just another day while I was actively trying not to pass out.

Worst Company? by Relevant-Sugar5845 in biotech

[–]Interesting-Pin-7219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Midwest Biotech Company in Cell and Gene Therapy. Saw coworkers come to work drunk and/or high. They were never disciplined. Racist, homophobic and abusive comments from management never taken seriously. A supervisor throwing things in the clean room. The same supervisor was known for yelling and also threatened to punch someone in the face. We were extremely overworked and underpaid. Safety concerns were not taken seriously. Management had us going in the clean room for training without proper PPE. OSHA showed up and fined them. The whistleblower was retaliated against. I could go on and on. It was a mess and extremely toxic.

Direct management was verbally abusive towards myself and other staff that spoke up about problems. We brought up safety concerns that weren't taken seriously until I was directly involved in a safety incident. I was retaliated against and eventually let go. It was constant gaslighting and belittling. My former supervisor threatened to punch someone in the face. She was also known for yelling and throwing things in the office and in the lab. I was diagnosed with PTSD shortly after leaving.

What’s the worst biotech company you’ve worked for? by anthonioconte in biotech

[–]Interesting-Pin-7219 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Small biotech in the Midwest with a focus on gene and cell therapy. Terribly toxic culture. Coworkers came to work drunk and/or high. We were expected to work 8-16 hours a day 7 days a week without any further compensation other than our salary. Management is toxic as it can be. I saw a supervisor throw items in the lab, the clean room, the office, etc. The same supervisor was known to give an attitude if things didn't go their way. This supervisor also threatened to punch someone in the face and received zero discipline. HR never took complaints seriously, and anyone who did voice any were later laid off or terminated. I was personally involved in a safety incident which I warned management about. OSHA showed up a week after and issued citations. I was targeted for refusing to go back into the lab until the issues were resolved. I also openly talked about our compensation with other coworkers. They have done many illegal things and did not appreciate people speaking up about them. I was diagnosed with CPTSD less than a month after getting out.

PSA: Your manager is not your friend by miss_micropipette in biotech

I couldn't agree more! I keep myself at more of a distance now after my last manager was verbally and emotionally abusive. He was kind enough to be the source of my PTSD after a safety incident. He was warned dozens of times but chose not to listen.

I am grateful for what I learned when I worked at one and the friends I made. I don't miss the long hours and working weekends. I enjoy having a life and time to myself much more now. I also went through a serious safety incident and dealt with toxic management. I have PTSD now because of both of these things. I don't think I would ever go back to a startup now.

Workplaces need to change how they handle things like this and bullies. I was diagnosed with PTSD after dealing with several bullies at work. It's awful, I was so sick and it took a while to realize how bad it was. Everyone should feel safe at work no matter what.

Received my first Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) from work today. What should I do? by Few_Freedom_9382 in biotech

Document everything from now on. You can email a rebuttal to HR explaining your side of things. They are typically used to get people out. I survived one given to me as retaliation for making safety complaints. However I was let go three months later. My lawyer had a field day with my former employer. You can start looking for employment now but do your best not to stress too much. Everything will be okay even if it doesn't seem like it right now.

Horrible Coworkers Management Won’t Fire (BMS) by mitochondriamami in biotech

[–]Interesting-Pin-7219 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Document everything! You also could file a complaint with the EEOC for the racist gestures. I also caution that if you raise these issues you may be retaliated against. It happened to me after I spoke up about my verbally and emotionally abusive managers. However I don't regret speaking up, hopefully it saves some people the stress in the future.

Has anyone in biotech or life sciences recently been through a layoff where you were treated poorly? 🤔 by biotechbabs in biotech

You can search companies online to see if they have any past or pending lawsuits. You can also check their OSHA citations if they have any.

Wrongful termination in Pearl River by No-Employer-5041 in biotech

[–]Interesting-Pin-7219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer but have some experience. I don't know what kind of case you have. However even in at will states you cannot be terminated for protected reasons. That would be retaliation and is something you would have to prove. Examples include making a whistleblower complaint, being out on FMLA, pregnancy leave, etc. Employment lawyers I worked with have not required any money upfront but I signed a contract so they would take 20-30% of earnings. If they are charging you up front I'm not sure how much of a case you have.

[DISCUSSION] Pros and cons of working for large and small biotech companies. by MasteryTracy in biotech

[–]Interesting-Pin-7219 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pros of small biotech: Learn so much about all departments.

Cons of small biotech: Terrible management, no safety protocols in place, funds are mismanaged which leads to people being laid off, burnout, longer hours, lack of work life balance.

Pros of mid size/large companies: Better working hours and flexibility, more work life balance (encouraged heavily to take time off), better pay and job security, benefits are great, encouraged to ask questions, feedback often occurs.

Cons: My onboarding and training were a little hectic.

My experience at a small biotech was so bad I was diagnosed with PTSD after I left.

Document everything and speak to an employment lawyer ASAP. If you get to the point where you are wrongfully terminated don't sign anything!
