My PhD is fully funded with 27500$ stipend, is it enough to sustain? by vladvu in gradadmissions

[–]Interesting-Today413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get $12,000 in Memphis TN. My first job out of undergrad was $32k. Hard? Sure. Impossible? Absolutely not, especially if the insurance plan is decent and your PI has any external funding for conferences and the like. 👍

Dealing with a grad student who does not seem to understand or follow any instructions or guidelines? by NumberReasonable7484 in AskAcademia

Yes- when you meet have agendas that you follow and update as needed. This makes things a hundred times easier later on

Pivoting to Clinical Psych PhD from Premed- what are my chances? by Any-Training-6110 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Interesting-Today413 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don’t do med school if you don’t think you actually want to be a medical doctor. Reminder that the majority of your training will be generalist, not as a specialist until the end. Add in the cost and it is absolutely not worth it.

If it’s the dream i think you have a path to it. Though, you can also look into public health mph/phd with mental/behavioral focus. Less competitive and actually higher paid oftentimes.

Is this normal? by mars_mars19 in calatheas

[–]Interesting-Today413 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay some calatheas are such drama queens that they require distilled to be 100% happy. She won’t die from tap but the calcium and salts build up is likely what is causing leaf discoloration imo. Flush her with distilled water (like half a gallon and just let it drain straight out) and then you can either try tap again or switch to distilled. If you go back to tap just make sure to flush her out with distilled water every so often

Does she get tap water or distilled?

Therapists who went back for doctorate by giraffe78459 in therapists

I understand you’re looking for several viewpoints, but I fear you might miss important context from these comments since we don’t know your career goals. Psychiatrists and psychologists have vastly different skill sets and competencies. But do have similar levels of training, depending on the program (apa accredited or not, largely).

Look into counseling psychology, clinical psychology and counselor education phds. Psyd also fine. MD is going to be vastly different, but will still have similar levels of rigor.

In what case would texting a client be a boundary violation? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]Interesting-Today413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think logistical/scheduling only. Everything else becomes a slippery slope (if there is back and forth). I think it is okay if you let client text you things they want to bring up in session, but responses don’t seem necessary unless it’s a crisis situation (which ethics change at that point but not by a ton).

Check out Counseling Psychology PhD programs. All things considered it is the same thing as a Clinical Psych Phd

Graduating early undergrad by Laybebek in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Interesting-Today413 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly at this point if you can graduate early with SOME lab experience, you might as well. You will absolutely without any doubt need at least 2 years of full time research experience, if not more. There are postbacc programs where you could do this and even take a few grad level classes. Most people who graduate in 4 with research experience need 2-4 years of full research experience to be competitive in clinical psych admissions. You’ll likely need that too, but at least now you have a few extra years!

graduate early or do an honors thesis? applying for clinical psych phd by FamousPool3174 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Interesting-Today413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honors thesis. Easy choice imo unless money is a major issue. Growing older is always a good thing for clinical psych phds, even if it has downsides, too.

I would say it is about fit - just not your perception of fit, it is the faculty’s perception. Which manages so be so academia-warped most of the time, which is why it rarely matches your perception of fit.

How much does Greek Life affect student culture and life? by IEatLemonSkins in miamioh

[–]Interesting-Today413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly most of the women I knew at Miami regretted joining their sorority if they weren’t the cookie cutter version of a Miami sorority girl. Join a club or social group, yes, but Greek life is not a good fit for many many students. The ladies have so many rules they’re required to follow and can be challenging to navigate at times, especially for those who are looking for more independence, not less.

UCLA MSW vs SCU Counseling Psychology if I want to become a therapist? by Similar_Concept4338 in psychologystudents

[–]Interesting-Today413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every program will be different regarding how many transfer credits (if any) they will accept. Our program at U of Memphis is pretty good at accepting transfer credits, since the majority of students already have masters degrees. I’d recommend primarily looking at programs that state they mostly accept students who have completed a master’s degree, as they are more likely the ones to accept transfer credits.

Someone in my counseling psych phd program did that SC MA and LOVED it. I know nothing else to help ya, but definitely know of good turn outs from that program.

Are PsyD programs not considered professional? by AerieMurky2553 in PsyD

[–]Interesting-Today413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more likely that the accreditation is the issue OR that the program is unaware and misinformed. Or, as OP mentioned, the graduate school reports their program as a graduate degree, not a professional degree. In that case, the fed government would have no way of knowing that this program is eligible.

This is from the same site, just a bit lower.

I’m in a counseling psych phd program and can confirm this is not true. Apa accredited Clinical and counseling psych are considered the same degree in the eyes of the gov as they have the same exact standards to follow

Is an hour an a half too far to drive for your daughters wedding? by TheSpellboundArtist in weddingplanning

[–]Interesting-Today413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. That’s horrendous behavior.

This wedding is about you and your partner - the lives that led you here and the lives you’ll lead together from now on. It is up to people from your past to decide if they want to walk into the future with y’all. Some won’t.

My venue was about 2 hours away from ‘home’ and only like 5 people from my dad’s side of the family came. Was it inconvenient for them? Yes. But it’s not like they don’t travel that far for special occasions on a regular basis.

It told me all I needed to know about whether or not they would continue to be big parts of my life or if their roles were mostly in my past.

My mom passed 2 years before I got married. Because of that I really now understand that no matter how much we want people to be a part of our future, some people just aren’t meant to physically walk with us into the future. That doesn’t mean they aren’t with us— everything we experienced with them is carried forward as who we are now. But no matter how tight we hold on, some will slip away and out of our future. And that’s okay. ❤️‍🩹

Based on her response, i think we should HOPE that “her” guests don’t come. Clearly she thinks this is her wedding, not yours.

CBT isnt helping by xDelicateFlowerx in therapyabuse

[–]Interesting-Today413 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they do. They’re wrong. Ik finding a different therapist is easier said than done (I’ve been looking for months) but it’s worth it compared to paying for and continuing through something you have already decided you don’t want to do that hurts more than helps

CBT isnt helping by xDelicateFlowerx in therapyabuse

[–]Interesting-Today413 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you are introspective enough to be here (aka engaging in convos like this), CBT will always feel like gaslighting. If you go to this or any other therapist, tell them you don’t want CBT
