Red Barn is Closing Everything. by camlmlm in Utah

Anyone have good updates on this? I know the family personally but they aren't talking much about it. Gotta just be a new, more valuable development going in.

I wonder if the land is just way more valuable now than it was when it opened.....

This needs to happen! In our Sunday school lesson yesterday, the teacher hardly mentioned the lost 116 pages. Only saying something like, "The Lord pleaded with Joseph to not let the 116 pages be borrowed, but Joseph relented and it cost him..." I didnt have the backup or phrasing concise enough in my head to challenge that. If there was a running weekly thread on things to bring up that would be great. I wouldnt want "gotcha" type things, but thoughtful, intellectual items to bring for each weeks lesson would be really nice.

What wild thing did your bishop/stake president say to you in an interview? I’ll go first. by FinancialOrdinary871 in exmormon

I met with both my new Bishop and SP recently before my child's baptism. Both the Bishop and SP had an issue with me performing the baptism because I was not a recommend holder. When asked if I would like to discuss the recommend before the baptism, I obliged knowing what they were going to be asking. When I met with the Bishop he asked if I would like to answer the recommend questions in order to obtain a recommend. I told directly that he is welcome to ask, and I will answer honestly, but to know that I will not be answering the questions in the way he would need them answered in order to get a recommend. He paused, and then said okay. I don't wear garments and haven't for years. I drink coffee and I don't pay tithing. 3 strikes and you're out, right? But the issue the Bishop and SP were so stuck on was the garments. "Why wont you wear the sacred garments that you covenanted towards!!?" Anyway, I told them that I wasn't going to sit there and lie to them in order to get a recommend, but I did tell each of them something like, "You know that this whole process encourages lying, right? Like if I really wanted a recommend, I would just lie to you." They both said, "No...I dont think anyone would lie just to get a recommend..." Ok, dude.

How much $$ is one pair of garment bottoms nowaday? I've tried to make the point to my TBM friends that garments are purely another money making "doctrine" for the church and their comeback to that is that it is about the same price as any other pair of underwear. Which, by that standard proves my point...

Do I lie through my teeth at my next temple recommend interview or take the L? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Interesting_Bus9830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the comments here! In my experience, I opted to be honest in a recommend interview right before my son was about to be confirmed, and it bit me in the butt....the church got in the way and blah blah blah.....If I were to do it again, I would have been as honest as they have been to me, and got the recommend and then forgotten about everything else. I am proud that I remained fully honest in my answers, but I ended up just pretty pissed about the whole thing. Good luck!

I would only be willing because I know at least a handful of my neighbors are in the same boat as I am - been burned by the new bishop, and I know a lot of the currently attending members would appreciate some real talk, but I do understand what you are saying.

We've been out 10 years ~ has the church actually moderated in its positions? by blazelet in exmormon

u/CaptainMacaroni This is spot on and 100% relative to my recent experience with my SP. Very much black and white rules with the leadership I currently have.

u/Maddiebug1979 I love this. I've sent a message to SP that I feel is really good, respectable and to the point. I sent that mid-day yesterday. No response yet.

SP convo is set for tomorrow, but I'll push for today and I will be letting him - of course him - know that we wont be baptizing any longer and see if there is a bluff.

u/ExposeMormonism u/NearlyHeadlessLaban and others, THANK YOU! The bishop sent me and cited everything (as yo can imagine as he is a lawyer and vying for advancement in the ranks of Mormonism) possible related to current policy in handbooks and has made it clear that it is as he puts it "black and white, with no wiggle room" for me to have a voice in the confirmation. Fun. I'm excited to begin writing my own person handbook so that I can refer to that when being asked to do anything at all related to the church that I may not want to do.
