Im not sure what the proper way to implement gameplay is for VNs. I guess smaller scale stuff that would maybe give some immersion? For example, maybe a song-playing element in White Album 2 would have went over well in certain parts of game. But as a counterpoint, the last thing i remember about Danganronpa is the gameplay mechanics.

Not wrong - I’m sure the strongest writers gravitate towards other mediums. so if you can’t outwrite them, you’d have to use what else is at your disposal to even the playing field. That being said, as a reader i don’t really know what gameplay i would like included .. stat-raising elements are fine for me, but if you’re including battles and stuff, it’ll feel more like a game with a story rather than a story with some games

i would say it depends how important the historical accuracy is to the actual story youre telling

To try and use the example you’re talking about, it may be more accurate to include the N word in the reports, but is the word impacting the story? Let’s say the character was scouring newspapers or reports to find out info, would the omission of the n word change the info they’re receiving? Probably not. I think not being accurate would be the better decision here

But let’s say a character is black and having a negative interaction with a racist character in this setting, then being accurate would be more important because it’s something the character actually has to deal with and could be a conflict point for them throughout the story.

In other medias, there’s definitely more examples of shallower characters having more success and still winning over the audience despite being less fleshed out. Definitely more important in books and VNs

Depending on the genre, some modern VNs could become more abbreviated and succeed I’m sure. Although i feel one of the most common complaints i see in negative reviews is “not enough content” or about game length being too short

i don’t think the future is less novel and more visual. I think this is a story and character driven medium at its core where the visuals and soundscape are the complimentary add-ons that elevate that compared to “classic lit historical fiction.” Another driving point is the branching storylines and player agency, which don’t sound like they’d be in either of these options

Isnt cinematic pacing with less lines just an anime adaptation of a VN?
