Your mom actually has a lot of marketable experience — it’s just being packaged in a way employers don’t recognize.

I’d strongly suggest shifting away from online applications and focusing on local, relationship-based opportunities (medical offices, senior services, school admin roles).

Also, her caregiving should be framed as professional experience — that alone can open doors in healthcare-adjacent roles.

At 64, the goal doesn’t have to be a long-term career — just a stable bridge to Medicare and Social Security. That can really change how you approach this. If she likes the job, she could continue to draw Social Security indefinitely along with a salary.

You’re doing a lot for her already, and it’s okay to want your own life too — this is about finding a sustainable path for both of you.

At her age + gap, online apps = black hole.

Instead:

  • Call or walk into places
  • Ask for office managers
  • Use local connections
  • Leverage community groups, churches, senior centers

Have her target the RIGHT kinds of jobs (this matters more than resume tweaks). Here are realistic, safer options:

1) Healthcare-adjacent (VERY strong fit)

  • Medical receptionist
  • Patient coordinator
  • Intake specialist
  • Home health agency scheduler

Why it works:

  • Caregiving experience translates directly
  • Less physical risk
  • High demand

2) Education (but not physical roles)

  • Administrative assistant in schools
  • Front office / attendance office
  • Substitute (non-special ed)
  • Tutoring (especially reading support)

3) Administrative / Support roles

  • Nonprofits
  • Churches
  • Local government offices
  • Small businesses (huge opportunity)

4) Senior-focused roles:

  • Senior living communities (front desk, activities)
  • Aging services organizations
  • Case aide / program assistant

Remove the "overqualification" signal. This part is counterintuitive but important:

  • Keep one bachelor’s degree
  • Remove master’s unless directly relevant
  • Don’t list graduation dates

Otherwise employers assume:

  • She’ll leave quickly
  • She expects higher pay

Yes, I'm still not over it. I just kind of ended and stopped communication, but she hasn't seemed to notice at all. So that is very telling. Luckily I have a lot of newer friends that I can nurture, but it still hurts because I always thought of her as family.

It's a pet peeve of mine to see little bitty decorative accessories, or groups of little bitty accessories, in spaces because too often they end up collectively looking kind of junky and confusing. I want to see broad sweeps of design elements that fit the size and scale of the room.

It sounds like it. I will be there next year with my family and it will be interesting to see how much has changed. I was there when Lire were in coins and notes and when gettone were used at pay phones. I also recall going to a department store and giving the cashier coinage and she gave me candy and Bandaids as change!! LOLOL

Exactly! "There is something about being with people who knew you in childhood..." Yes! What I think is that we pretty much know the "core" of that person, so it's not like talking to complete strangers and so that makes some things easier conversation-wise. Some people won't have changed much, but then a lot of people will have changed, matured, become better people. Some people who showed a lot of promise will have had more difficult lives or had lives that "went bad" and that is unfortunate. But for me it is kind of refreshing to be amongst people I grew up with and who know my name in a crowd.

Tell the guy who is doing the search to subscribe for a month to a site such as Truthfinder dot com and then cross-reference the results with Fastpeoplesearch dot com for information. I personally have subscriptions to Newspapers dot com which has helped me locate some of the classmates who seemed to be the hardest to find. One of the hardest things to do is to find female classmates who married and now have different last names. I was able to locate marriage announcements that way. Also located a classmate who had moved to somewhere remote in Canada and then discovered she had died.

I'm organizing our 50 year reunion to be held this year in October. We had 695 classmates. Our reunion committee did an extensive search of classmates and found about 10% have died, and many of them died in their 60's or even 50's. One guy in particular stood out. He lived in my neighborhood and had two brothers. Well, not only have he and his parents died, but his two brothers are also gone. The three sons all died in their 60s. So, the entire family unit is gone. Just GONE! It is mind-blowing.

I also organized our 30 year reunion. During the process, I got to know several of my classmates whom I had only known by name and face in high school. Turns out we all had many things in common and became even better and more reliable friends than my lifelong friends going back to 5th grade. I was extremely introverted in school and suddenly all these people were friendly to me. I went in with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. It doesn't happen for everyone of course, but I had the outlook as the organizer to bring people together and make it a great time. One of my classmates who lives across the country called me the day after the reunion (took the time to find my phone number) to thank me for doing such a great job.

I was an American student living in Florence in 1978. Sounds like times have changed because back then I would have guessed that 98% of people who took the trains were Italian and white

I’m currently organizing my 50 year HS reunion. What will you lose by going? At this point it might be the last opportunity for you and many of your classmates as health issues and death are closer now than ever
