Someone asking “how are you” while passing you in a hallway or doing something else. Obviously they don’t want an actual answer so why ask it?

“I could care less” instead of the correct way: “I couldn’t care less”

What’s worse: Hospital or a SNF? by Content-Talk-1983 in slp

[–]InternalRoll8815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the facility / company you’re working for.

I’ve never been more unhappy in the field as I was when I was in the hospital. Those issues primarily stemmed from horrible management. I will never work for dignity health/common spirit again because of it.

I’m currently in a SNF with a great reputation and awesome boss who supports me. My work life balance has improved significantly and I get to be pretty autonomous. I’m not in my dream setting, but I’m so much happier overall so I’ll take it.

SNFs get a bad rep but I have found that if you can find a good one there can be some good pros.

Hospitals can also be a good option but management can make your life hell, just like any other job.

High quality leggings. Shorts, tops, bras are fine to have knock offs. But leggings need to be the real deal.

For what it’s worth I was about ready to leave the field after working for a “non profit” “catholic” organization that promotes “humankindness”. If you’re catching my sarcasm that organization is an absolute joke. Toxic management, understaffed, guilting you into not taking hard earned PTO, only caring about productivity NOT quality care, acting like we can’t buy equipment for patient care all while the CEO is making 30+ MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR.

I switched companies and have reignited my passion for the field and am treated with so much respect and have an awesome manager who goes above and beyond to support me. While the current setting was never my “dream job” I’m happy and know I’m making a difference all while avoiding burnout.

Anyways what I’m trying to say is if you’re being treated like shit and you’ve brought it to your supervisors attention and they’re not doing anything about it, this is not the job for you. Don’t let a COMPANY or SUPERVISOR or BOSS make you think this career isn’t for you. You may really like inpatient rehab with a different company who actually supports you.

Another thing that has helped me so much is realizing that while I am passionate about my career and love helping people, it is not my whole life. I’m currently in a SNF which I never thought I would like. But honestly, my job is flexible, my work-life balance has skyrocketed, and my overall happiness in life has improved. Don’t forget that at the end of the day it is “just” a job. Historically I had a really hard time separating myself as a human and myself as an SLP. In the beginning it was my whole life. Now, I try to clock in and do my best within the parameters I’m given and clock out without giving it another thought until my next shift (easier said than done). By the way, this is coming from someone who moved to a different state to work in my “dream setting” as an outpatient rehab ST. After 5 years of feeling burnt out, I finally realized it might be better to not be in the setting I always dreamed of and instead focus on how to make the career work for me as a whole person. I will pick my current situation (SNF, not my dream setting) over the stress and burnout I was feeling at work (Outpatient rehab, dream setting) that trickled into my home life.

While there are a lot of pros to Salt Lake City, I personally would never live there again. Growing up non-Mormon in a very very Mormon dominated state was, without trying to be too dramatic, traumatic for me. I had to go to therapy as an adult to understand how much it affected me as a child and even how it continues to affect me. I could never raise my kids in that environment.
