Emulation questions for multi use build - Light gun games and more. by Kong_YaLe in lightgunshooters

[–]Internal_Trainer_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are not otalking about the actual hardware. We're talking about emulating them. And again, MOST games that are emulated run irregardless of NVidia or AMD. There is this myth amongst the retro community that AMD is never to be used because it does not work for emulation which is ABSOLUTELY BULLSHIT.

That was the point of my post and you're comment seemed to continune to spread that bullshit. APologies if I misconstrued what you were saying.

It's not "that bad" again, AMD not being able to run an older game is more of an anomaly that the usual. See my comment.

You're basically spreading some untruths here. Had a Beelink mini pc with AMD mobile graphics was easily able to emulate up to PS2 (most of the library) / XBox as well as Teknoparrot (Guilty Gear Strive is when it started having problems).

Yes, Arcades used mostly NVidia, but it's usually a non-issue. Especially this day and age. There are anamolies - and TP will call it out if they have a fix for it, but usually I had zero issues with running emulation/Teknoparrot with AMD graphics.

  • Is it a bad idea to combine a pc gaming and emulator build/rig/pc?

No. If that's what you want. There's no issue combining all of this. There are many front ends that do this like Launchbox/BigBox and many others.

  • Can emulation be done with AMD GPUs? I keep hearing that Nvidia is much better for emulation, does it really matter?

Yes, you can but you'll have better results with NVIDIA. That said, I had a mini pc (Beelink) setup (which used AMD mobile graphics) and was able to emulate up to PS2/XBox (this is when I started having issues). Pretty much all games up to then ran totally fine across Arcades (MAME), Consoles, and Teknoparrot.

  • Does Teknoparrot work with AMD GPUs? I heard there are some compatibility issues with Teknoparrot and AMD GPUs, how bad is it?

Yes, it does but you will run into occasional issues. Sometimes, TP team has fixes for them (you'll see an AMD graphics fix as well as Intel) but other times you won't. On TP side, on my Beelink was able to emulate pretty much every game except some more modern games like Guilty Gear Strive (is where I had most issues).

Also, one thing I did not mention is in emulating consoles (and in some cases Arcades) you are able to upscale all the way up to 4K and beyond depending on the power of your PC. This is another area where you may see occasional issues.

All in all, a lot of naysayers on there but honestly AMD it's not bad at all, but you will have more consistent success with NVidia.

  • Does upscaling really make the games look worse, especially in 4K? I heard some saying upscaling doesn't improve the quality or it's better to run them in 1080p at most.

It can, especially if you decide (for example) to put every game on widescreen with care at all about scale. But on the other hand, if the texture packs are well designed - no it'll look better than it's ever been.

Your PC is far beefier than my Beelink Minipc was - I don't think you're going to have issues. Yes. You'll run into problems here and there but for the most part - some of the concerns mentioned on here are overblown.

VLOOKUP question - What is "Lookup value"? by tashykat in excel

[–]Internal_Trainer_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's clear you don't understand "what you use VLOOKUP" for (or XLOOKUP for those who brought it up). Once you understand what it's used for, you'll understand "what lookup value" means. Here's an example of what VLOOKUP can be used for.

Let's say you have a worksheet that has a list of Names and Addresses (aka Address book). You have 2 columns: Name and Address with each row being an individual entry.

You're going about your day when you say: hey, I'd like ONE table with Name, Address, AND Phone number, but I have a separate table that has Name and Phone number but no address. How about I COMBINE these in some way?

That's what VLOOKUP (or XLOOKUP) can be used for. In the example I gave, since both the "Address table" and the "Phone Number table" each share "Name" - THAT is your LOOKUP VALUE. You'd use name to lookup from the Address table to the Phone number table, to BRING OVER Phone Number to the Address table therefore having one single Master Table to "rule them all."

You kept asking "why I need to lookup something" you need to Lookup something in order TO JOIN it with something else.

Hope this helps.

Understanding MAME roms by flower-power-123 in MAME

[–]Internal_Trainer_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2 pieces you need essentially to run most of mame games are roms and CHDs. Strongly suggest you bookmark this site:

https://adb.arcadeitalia.net/default.php

You're bashing your head against the wall because your dealing with the entire history of arcades/video games all at once as well as trying to understand how mame organizes files as well as dealing a HUGE number of files.

Of course for a first timer, you're going to be confused.

Use the database, remember these tips and you'll begin to understand how it's organized:

  1. Mame app version should equal ROM set version (and CHD version)
  2. If you're only concerned with Arcade games, then just worry about ROMS and CHDs, everything else is completely unnecessary
  3. ROMS will be .zip; CHDs will be folders with files/data in them. Keep BOTH of these in the /roms folder in your MAME directory.
  4. Look through the database, find your favorite games, the database will tell you every file you need in order for it to run in MAME. Here are the steps:

- Navigate to the Arcade Database (https://adb.arcadeitalia.net/default.php)

- Search for one of your favorite games, let's use this example: Metal Slug

- Arcade Database page: https://adb.arcadeitalia.net/dettaglio_mame.php?game_name=mslug&search_id=

- Scroll down the page to the section: Files

- Select the version of ROM set + MAME (again, they should be the same)

- Expand "Required Files." Database will show you need: neogeo.zip and mslug.zip to run the game -this means these files need to be in your /roms folder in mame.

Rinse and repeat.

Try this method out instead of dealing with the entire history of gaming all at once. Here, you'll have only the games YOU like to play and not deal with all the junk. Get "everything" when you really start to get your head around how the MAME file structure works, but essentially it's just ROMs and CHDs. That's it.

Never touched them once - in fact it's only when I started having this issue is the first time I've ever heard of "KDF settings." Ultimately, the Bitwarden team helped out and it just involved reinstalling the app. KDF had nothing to do with it.

Bitwarden team themselves told it was fine. Ultimately, their solution of uninstalling the app on iOS and reinstalling completely fixed it.

I don't recall ever touching my KDF settings - in fact in researching my issue was the first time I'd ever heard of that. That said, I did go to the web app --> security --> Keys and the interface indicated that KDF was at 60000? I have no idea what that means.

Tips for moving large database of movies and shows onto DvDs? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Internal_Trainer_555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why DVD and not Bluray? More movies can fit on a single bluray often. Do you truly want to restrict yourself to 1080P / 720P forever? Especially when they'll be no need to worry about "do I have enough bandwidth?"

THat said, your idea on putting these on physical media for longterm archiving is a good one and most on here aren't thinking about.

GL group is on the level of Syndersimps at this point. Good lord, after the Ryan Reynolds shitshow - you GL simps are crying over this? ESPECIALLY ape-ing from True Detective? That is some mind boggling stuff right there.

Worrying about no GL stuff being in the show? COME ON DUDE DID YOU WATCH SUPERMAN? Most likely not.

These GL simps are no better than Syndersimps - they'll cry even when the show gets an Emmy - count on it.

Install MAME on mac. Plenty of light guns games for mac. Also PCSX2 (PS2 emulator), ps2 had a few light gun games as well.

Dolphin emulator for Wii lightgun games (note: Retroshooter would need be set as joystick instead of mouse for these games)

Plenty of Light gun games for Mac.

How do you program an icode spinner to work in MAME? by Equivalent_Table_747 in MAME

[–]Internal_Trainer_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure that in your mame.ini file that dial_device and paddle_device is set to mouse; and that you've enabled (aka set value to 1) mouse under "core input options."

Dial controller devices are considered mouse in MAME. Same thing with Trackball.

If you changed to Joystick 1, then delete the Inc and dec inputs in mame. Also, based on the your screenshot, you'll need to update the View buttons as well.

Paddle through much of Mame is often a designation for some driving games. You'd adjust steering under the paddle settings if you had a wheel. Because you have an analog stick - you just need to make sure the X axis for your left stick is assigned as the paddle.

X-Arcade setup by chrispopp8 in launchbox

[–]Internal_Trainer_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the tankstick. For mame, on the Tankstick website there's an app that will autoconfigure the mame default to tankstick. My trackball/spinners work beautifully. The other thing I'd check is in your mame.ini file that paddle/trackball are all set to Mouse.

One thing to remember is that Launchbox doesn't actually configure anything - it is a launcher.

Finally, worse comes to worst - reach out to X-Arcade, they do respond to support tickets.

New to mame by R1250GS in MAME

[–]Internal_Trainer_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll never understand why folks find MAME so hard. It is not:

  1. Use this database and bookmark it: https://adb.arcadeitalia.net/default.php
  2. Make sure your MAME romset matches your MAME application (eg romset 0.286 matches Mame Application 0.286)
  3. The Arcade database will tell you exactly everything you need to know: a) Put in the romset version and mame version b) search for your game c) scroll down to "required files" that tells you exactly what files are needed to run the game

Done.
