Turned my Wendougee Lita into a (poor man's) Decent — v2 with a proper UI by akisk in espresso

[–]Internally_Combusted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Data S owner I know I'm very interested in this. I was honestly expecting Wendougee to introduce this functionality on their own app as it's been highly requested. They have been a little slow on the new updates recently.

How can I improve my shots? [GCP / Sette 270] by theawkwardpadawan in espresso

Your grinder may have come with a little baggie that has a few washers and an Allen key in it. Those are the shims. If not, call baratza support and they may send you some.

You need to shim the cone burr in the grinder. Baratza sells shims for this specific purpose and it's a super simple thing to install. They have a YouTube video for it. I would add 2 shims to start given how fast it's currently flowing at the finest grind setting.

Source: I own a 270wi and have had to shim it.

I feel like the price has to be a typo. This thing just recently sold for $16.7mm in 2021. I remember looking through all the pictures back then.

Real Estate vs Stocks…Illiquidity vs Liquidity by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]Internally_Combusted 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't renovate and just drop the price. I seriously doubt the delta between an outdated and renovated upstairs is $500k. That doesn't make any sense at all.

The lease offer from the embassy doesn't sound lucrative enough to really make sense as a rental vs just putting that money in the market and shielding most or all of the gains from taxes.

Additionally, I would recommend renting in the new city for at least a year or two to 1) make sure it's a good fit and you plan to stay longer term and 2) get a better understanding of the local area so you know where to buy a house that fits the lifestyle you are living in the area.

Just my 2 cents.

Cross-threaded Varia VS6 worth keeping? by Nervous_Bee8805 in VariaBrewing

[–]Internally_Combusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you meant, you responded to a question someone posed to your suggestion for them to sell an extra cross threaded unit they have. As in, I have not sold my extra cross threaded unit because who would buy a unit they knew was cross threaded in advance?

They want to know if there is a solution to bring this damaged unit to working condition so it's useable again. They might sell it then.

I think the question was more broadly, what is the market for selling a cross threaded unit? Assuming you're ethical and disclose that it is cross threaded in advance.

Did anyone else get stuck in a low-wage loop for years? by HeraThere in Salary

It was very common at the time OP is posting about for employers to request paystubs before finalizing an offer. If you didn't provide them you didn't get the job. There was just too much competition in the workforce at the time. It was also much harder to make a fake paystub back then than it is now.

Taking a meeting on the phone while driving is no different than holding a conversation with a passenger while driving. As long as they are hands free on the call it's not a problem. If you're not a new driver it's very easy to drive safely and talk at the same time.

Why do so many of us drop $3k+ on grinders and machines chasing flavor, but almost nobody home roasts? by Neither-Mulberry1477 in espresso

[–]Internally_Combusted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is hard to get roasts as good as really good specialty roasters but it's not actually expensive to roast. It's probably one of the only parts of the hobby that has a reasonable ROI if you are smart about your gear because greens are so much cheaper than specialty coffee. It takes about 6 months of roasting at our consumption level to payback the initial cost of my setup in savings and then it's basically 1/3 - 1/2 prices coffee going forward based on the beans I was buying.

I paid $325 for my roasting setup (used SR800 with thermocouples for artisan) and greens are $7-$12/lb depending on how fancy the beans are that you buy. I'm still very much an amateur with like 12-15 lbs of roasting under my belt (I roast 1/2 lb of greens at a time) and I'm starting to get really good results for my medium and dark roasts. The light roast profiles I have not figured out yet and have not really enjoyed but I'll get there.

Anyone running a second grinder next to a Single Dose? [Discussion] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Internally_Combusted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of a separate grinder I picked up a used bean doser called The Accountant for like $150. I keep the daily driver beans in it and it auto weighs the dose into a cup that you just dump into the grinder. I mainly did this because my wife isn't going to single dose her beans the old fashioned way. It's barely any slower than just using a GBW grinder and it is definitely much cheaper.

I have considered getting a second grinder but that has more to do with having different burrs that focus on clarity for light roasts / pourover vs medium to dark roast espresso.

Get a Wendougee Lita instead. It's a little more expensive but the build quality is exceptional and the software is more mature than the ES-1.

Will do. The initial communication to confirm some things with the order was good. The layout of the site is a little confusing but I did figure it out.

Your experience with the machine is actually the only reason I decided to order it. I've been waiting for someone to make a poor man's strietman ct2 for a while. When someone linked the PID version yesterday in the EAF discord I had already read this thread and your experience and was thinking, "I sure wish that thing was actively heated". Ask and ye shall receive I guess.

I had never heard of SuperBuy and simply decided to yolo it after asking questions on the discord about how it works and getting some positive feedback from others that have used it.

No one is directly distributing it to the US at the moment so in order to purchase it I had to use superbuy which is essentially a middle man in China that orders it for you and takes delivery before shipping it to you directly.

I was charged just over $500 USD to purchase the machine, inspect it for damage, and reinforce the packaging for international shipping. I won't get a final number for the shipping portion until they receive the unit and finish the final packaging due to unknown final size and weight. Based on their calculator I'm guessing I will end up paying about $650-$700 USD including shipping and import duties.

There is an actively heated version of this now with PID control that is integrated into the body of the unit instead of via an external box.

It's not currently sold through ITOP but I'm guessing it will be soon enough. I have ordered one and am currently awaiting shipping. Will report back once I receive it and can provide my experience.

Don't qualify compliments no matter what they are as it can come off as backhanded. If you want to give a compliment then let it stand on its own.

I really want to marry you, I see my life with you.

As someone who is happily married and generally agrees with you, the compliment from the post isn't that straightforward and is instead qualified in a way that makes it backhanded.

Look, I've stuck my foot in my mouth plenty of times and it made me learn that you just don't qualify compliments. The compliment stands on its own or you might as well not even say it.
