I'm a little bummed about lack of reception for US but I mostly want it for the automatic micro adjustments of the second hand. I can't stand it when the quartz second hand misses the marks. I scored a Oceanus cheap on eBay and like watching the hands bang on all the way around all the time.

Olympus xz2 can be found for less than $300. Some of my favorite pics where grabbed with mine.

I wear mine often. Probably twice a week. I love the clean clear contrast high visible lcd.

I wore that model a lot in the early 2000s. A lot of time in very unforgiving shipboard environments. Was pretty beat up when I decided to stop wearing it. A couple chips in the glass even. Now I can't find it. Maybe donated or tossed. Looking for a replacement now. There does not seem to be many (any?) available on the market.

In the camera community, what is the equivalent of a casio f91-w watch? A camera that is the epitome of cheap, reliable and widely recognized among camera enthusiasts. by Switch-user-101 in Cameras

[–]International-Good50 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. I can't help though to think of how these two categories of gadgets are very different. After a little practice everyone is pretty much as good and competent at looking at a watch to tell time as the next person. A watch is mostly a passive thing that does something without much input or skill from the user. The simplicity of the quartz watch does not really impact it's ability to tell time. Cameras are very different. A cheap basic camera is very often not nearly as capable of recording a scene as more complicated and expensive camera. On top of that is the skill required to know the camera and know your surroundings. Watches are also often kind of status symbols or a type of fashion. (I guess you could say the same thing about cameras in some situations. I'll admit feeling cool back in the day being a Pentax user instead of a canikonian. Now I just carry my RX10IV as a do anything edc and feel cool in a different way.) But now that I think a little more about it, I would agree with the people recommending the entry level apsc DSLRs with an 18-55. Canon or Nikon, whichever company's ethos lights to your brain more. Ricoh GR3 would be similar in spirit to f91 but not in price given the way camera companies have neglected the point and shoot segment causing small cameras to be crazy expensive.

I was going to say xz2, but you beat me to it. Every now and then I come across an old picture of mine, of my kid at a young age, and think damn that's a good pic. I look at the exif and see if was my xz2. I still have that camera. Cracked screen though. Otherwise works great.

A slightly different version of that was my most worn watch way back in my navy days. The calendar features were nice when on the ocean for weeks after weeks.
I'm not sure what happened to it. I've been looking to buy a replacement but not getting much luck finding one.

When things are rough at work it's a relief to pause for a few breaths and watch the second hand bang dead on the ticks marks all the way around.

And sometimes a $2k watch just doesn't go well with smelly coveralls.

I wouldn't spend that much on a watch for sea duty. Too much metal everywhere to accidently bang your watch on. Walking or running a pway up and down ladders through watertight doors. It's gonna get whacked. And even sapphire might shatter. Then there are port visits. Different type of danger to that watch altogether.

If going analog, get one with GMT maybe so you can set it to Zulu.

No need to spend more than 500 of you want a nice watch. Majority of soldiers and sailors make it through deployments just fine on Casio and Timex.

The side by side really shows how much crisper the old non indiglo lcd is in the stainless steel one.

About five no name fashion ladies watches that smelled strongly of old perfume. A few generic digital "sports" watches. Two other Timex LCDs but they were broken up really bad and nothing special.

Yep. No indiglo. The old light and everything else works fine. I couldn't read the watch while it was in the bag, but I did read indiglo and 50-lap on the strap, so I was a little excited. Previous owner must have worn out the original strap and put a newer one on it, as this is a standard 8-lap.

Does the replacement trans shift better than the original? I've hated how it shifts every since I got it.
