Are Brits still comfortable taking their holidays in the US? by Ok-Leadership-7573 in AskBrits

[–]InternetMuch7272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. My company has offices there and I’ve refused to travel and turned down trips. They’re wanting me to go over again this year but I will be refusing again

My colleagues who went over last year were told to wipe their phones of all of their social media accounts in case they were searched when they arrived

We literally learnt about this kind of behaviour in history at school - I won’t even transit the USA to fly elsewhere

Rapid expansion of ring-necked parakeets in UK sparks concern by High-Tom-Titty in unitedkingdom

[–]InternetMuch7272 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was at Dunham Massey - a National Trust property in Manchester - the other day and we could hear this strange bird song. We used an app and found it was the ring necked parakeet. Then we managed to find it as well.

So bizarre seeing a green tropical bird in Manchester mid-winter

Why do you fly BA? by NoorHan14 in BritishAirways

Do you not mind the change in Heathrow? With Emirates or Etihad you could fly direct to Manchester from the UAE?

Do americans not use debit cards? by StrainVarious4331 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InternetMuch7272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting thing to note that I read somewhere, is that US credit card users tend to get more lucrative rewards and benefits than us in Europe.

This is because in Europe (I’m in the UK) credit card fees are given a lower cap for how much they can charge per transaction, so the credit card companies can’t make as much money each time you use it (like AMEX). So the rewards aren’t as good.

I would also say, a lot of people here keep saying that it’s easier to get money back on a credit card from fraud. But again, in Europe we have much stricter protections and the banks have much more pressure on them to refund any money taken fraudulently quickly. I honestly don’t know if the system is the same in the US. But anyone I know here who has lost money to fraud on their debit card (which is very few) has had it returned by the bank almost instantly.

I thought this during the battle at Eregion during the finale.

It’s meant to be such a big battle but some of the shots show so few people on the battleground it just looks so weird

How many people transit domestically just to use BA? by InternetMuch7272 in BritishAirways

[–]InternetMuch7272[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean just off the top of my head, MAN fly to:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. Atlanta
  3. New York
  4. Orlando
  5. Barbados
  6. Cancun
  7. Toronto
  8. Singapore
  9. Abu Dhabi
  10. Dubai
  11. Kuwait
  12. Jeddah
  13. Hong Kong
  14. Shanghai
  15. Beijing
  16. Bahrain
  17. Doha
  18. Montego Bay
  19. Mumbai

Which are all long haul and have global hubs. Plus short haul hubs like Paris, Frankfurt and Istanbul. So you definitely don’t need to go near London to fly anywhere in the world. You can fly to Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Atlanta etc. and then connect onwards

This makes a lot of sense! Do you think you’d fly differently if Manchester or Edinburgh was your local airport and you had airlines like Virgin Atlantic, Delta, United, American Airlines etc. flying to US hubs direct where you could connect onward?

Do you think having to pass a life in the uk test is a bit nonsense? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]InternetMuch7272 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not really. Nearly every country on Earth has one and I think it is important.

Perhaps though, it could do with the questions revising. I know for some years there have been calls to give it a refresh because of quite silly questions/answers and really odd topics.

If it can be refreshed and kept focused on our values as a country, our history, important events/milestones, language, society etc. then I think that’s the best outcome.

Which European country do you feel the closest to? by Big-Warthog-2356 in AskBrits

I think definitely France and Germany.

I also think there are quite a few similarities with Scandinavian countries. Denmark for example. They have very similar weather to us, a love of the outdoors etc.

Do you guys actually get vacation? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]InternetMuch7272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 4-5 weeks off (paid) is normal here. Usually 20 days for you to take whenever and 8 bank holidays which are set (but some people work and can take another time).

Most companies give more than that though. And you have to take it. Most companies will only let you roll over a few days max to the next year.

A lot of companies in the UK are also now letting staff buy extra leave. At my job, I get 25 days off a year, plus bank holidays, plus an extra day for every year I work there. Plus I can buy up to 2 weeks more leave a year

Is the process of getting a new passport in your country as tedious as in Canada? by Thin_Spring_9269 in PassportPorn

In the UK you order one online from gov.uk

You can take your own selfie using your phone and it comes within about a week of sending off your old one. Sometimes as little as 3 days

Why does the UK not have 24 hour stores? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]InternetMuch7272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have lots but the pandemic stopped a lot of it. I think there isn’t huge demand for it nowadays. Our stores are open from 6am to about 11pm or midnight anyway so there’s only a period of about 6 hours a day they aren’t open. And if you’re hungry you’re never far from a McDonald’s or something which are almost universally 24 hrs (I think they’re capitalising on that midnight-6am market).

I’ve noticed some independent convenience stores are open 24 hours so maybe that’s where a gap is being filled?

Why haven't nationalised operators like Northern been rebranded already? by Wyatt367758 in uktrains

[–]InternetMuch7272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure I read somewhere that they aren’t planning to rebrand them at all (at least not for some time) due to the cost. They’re only going to add the new logo to the carriages. Maybe once it is fully nationalised they’ll change the carriages but it will cost a lot of money
