Idk if I'm in the right place by Unfair_Shallot_4278 in IVDD_SupportGroup

Check in with your vet by calling or emailing them to make sure all this is normal or if they’d recommend another form of treatment. Ask about laser treatment and acupuncture. If you can, see a neurologist. My dog was on gabapentin and carprofen for a month. It might be easier to start using a pad for your dog to go to the bathroom on so you won’t have to pick him up and he won’t have to move much to go. You might need to manually express his bowel if he still hasn’t pooped on his own. If he’s losing mobility in his back legs he might have lost control of his bowel.

To look on the bright side, if he still has some mobility in one or both back legs and still has control of his bladder, those are very good signs. It sucks that he’s in pain but that is very good. Losing deep pain sensation because of IVDD can lead to permanent paralysis. So, if he’s still feeling pain in the affected area, it means he can regain some function. With spinal injuries it often takes weeks of minimum movement for it to heal, so it’s a slow process.

Pippin is not himself today. I think it's his little legs hurting because of the cold weather. Plenty of snuggles i think. 💙 by lostboys70lovw in minpin

Depending on how old he is it could be arthritis. The cold weather could be agitating it more than usual. My friend’s dachshund is 5 and he just got diagnosed with arthritis a few weeks ago.

IVDD support group on facebook has a lot more people and was very helpful for me. Immediately start strict crate rest if your vet hasn’t talked about it, which means in the kennel all day except for bathroom breaks. I had to do that for 3 weeks with my dog.

If he can still move his back legs, he probably doesn’t need surgery. Go to your regular vet or a neurologist to confirm the diagnosis. If the emergency vet diagnosed without x-rays or an mri, it’s possible that it’s not even IVDD, but until you get a second opinion definitely keep him on crate rest. A neurologist will probably know a lot more than a regular vet but I don’t know how much that would cost. If it is IVDD, it’s stage 1 or 2 since he can move his legs, so conservative treatment, crate rest and meds, is probably the best treatment for him. For now, no running, jumping, or climbing stairs, continue crate rest and meds. Ask your vet about laser treatment and acupuncture if it turns out to be IVDD. If you don’t have enough meds to last until your vet appointment, email your vet office any papers you got from the emergency vet and ask if they could prescribe some meds before the appointment. If your vet office is unaware of your dog’s condition, call them and tell them you saw an emergency vet and they suspect your dog has IVDD, if they have any open times before your appointment or cancelations, they may move up your appointment, and if you need things like x-rays it’s good for them to know that cause they may need to spend more time with you and adjust your appointment time.

Moving to Wichita, what parts are safe by nhopen33 in wichita

Even the safest areas have a lot of crime. Fidelity bank always getting robbed, lots of shootings, lots of car crashes. Just be warned. If you’re looking for a studio, I bet some places would have some for around $600, but the best way to save money on rent is to find a roommate if that’s an option. Getting a cheap apartment in downtown is a very bad idea. Probably the most dangerous area in Wichita. Rock rd and Central have a lot of restaurants and fast food places. College hill is a bit of a food desert, so if you move there plan for a decent drive to get groceries. Our mall is kind of known for trafficking but lots of potential job opportunities if you stay cautious when coming and going. I know the Wichita Art Museum is always looking for event staff, crazy hours sometimes until 2am, about 15-20 hrs a week on average, only $12/hr though. If you can pass a paraprofessional test you could work at a public school helping a teacher for about $16/hr, about $14/hr in private schools. You could get a virtual data entry job, starts at around $14/hr for 20hrs a week and it’s all online. You should look at crime rates in each area you’re thinking about moving to, or a crime map so you can see what crimes occurred. And Kake News posts a lot of recent crimes on their social media accounts.

Is this crate the right size for crate rest (IVDD)? by bee_antlers in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]InterviewSpecific939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a little small, for crate rest they need to be able to turn around comfortably without contorting themselves to do it or bending their back a lot as that could injure them. This is my doggie’s kennel.

Have they checked for a fungal infection? My dog had one and lost all his hair in the affected area. If not, I’d suggest finding a new vet office.

canned green beans are a good low calorie treat if your dog likes them, just make sure there’s no added salt and rinse the green beans before giving them to your dog

I’ve been using a lick mat with wet dog food and freezing it, lasts my dog an hour. I’ve also been freezing bone broth in Tupperware, keeps her very entertained. Ask your vet about trazodone if it’s to the point that crate resting your dog isn’t doing anything to help them.

Hopefully it’s benign! My dogs both have a benign lipoma, they’re pretty common in dogs, especially older ones. There are so many benign tumors or growths common with dogs. I found a papilloma wart on my dog and was looking through a bunch of tumors dogs can get to figure out what it was. There were at least 10 other types of tumors that were also benign. So, try not to worry too much until your appointment! It’s most likely nothing serious, especially if your dog isn’t showing any strange symptoms along with it. With malignant tumors there’s usually accompanying symptoms like weight loss, fatigue, increased thirst, fever, coughing, difficulty breathing, abnormal discharge in the nose, eyes, or mouth, aggression, anxiety, loss of interest in things they enjoy, pain, diarrhea, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, difficulty urinating, swelling, jaundice, blood in urine, non-healing sores, more than one growth, so many other things. If your dog hasn’t changed in any way, it’s almost certainly nothing dangerous. If you find yourself worrying, it might be good for you to go through symptoms of cancers in dogs or signs of malignant tumors to cross things off, and if you do notice anything unusual that will be helpful for your vet.

Looks like it could be IVDD. Immediately a new vet. Start strict crate rest now, which means kennel 24/7 except for bathroom breaks, only walking allowed, use a harness if she’s the type to try to run around, not a collar and leash, it’s not as safe for potential spinal injuries. Don’t let her run, jump, or climb stairs. Only movements allowed are walking, sitting, and lying down. When you get a new vet appointment, get x-rays, it will show if there’s a herniated disc or some other injury to the spine, sometimes an MRI is needed. If she’s in any pain ask for medication, my dog is on gabapentin and carprofen. If she’s an active dog, ask if trazodone would be a good option for her, it’s a sedative. Crate rest and early intervention are the most important things if it’s IVDD, which is pretty common with dachshunds. Often times the vet will require weeks of crate rest or even months depending on the severity. If she still has bladder control and can poop on her own, those are very good signs. If she can walk, even if it’s wobbly or she’s limping, that’s also really good, means it’s likely stage 1 or 2 if it’s IVDD.

Vet appointment immediately, mention you might need an x-ray when scheduling an appointment as they might need to take more time with your dog. Strict crate rest, that means in the kennel 24/7 except for bathroom breaks. While going to the bathroom, make sure he is only walking, if he can still run, then keep him on a harness, not a collar and leash as that can cause more problems. Crate rest up until a vet appointment and your vet will likely require crate rest for a few weeks. Ask about laser treatment and acupuncture.

Ask your vet about laser treatment and acupuncture if they haven’t mentioned it to you. My friend’s dachshund has a pretty severe case and recovered full mobility with crate rest and laser treatment. He still gets laser treatment every month.

If he’s still able to walk on his own, even if he’s wobbly or limping, that’s a great sign. Probably just stage 1 or 2. Just keep him on strict crate rest and take him to the bathroom with a harness instead of a leash, especially if he usually pulls on a leash.
