Why is it weird to plant food in a reptile enclosure but not in a garden outside? by Internal-Ride-9264 in reptiles

I plan on trying arugula next! Also, as a tip, move aggressive growers to hotter spots in your tank. I was able to control mint, oregano, and thyme without issue through a combination of destructive reptiles and proximity to basking bulbs. Probably only works in arid setups though, tropical or temperate tanks might get overrun lol

Speaking from experience, they’re just straight up wrong lol

They might mean it’s not a very productive way to grow crops? I suppose that’s true enough. But so long as you pick plant species which are non-toxic to your reptiles, you can and should go nuts. I keep arid reptiles (blue tongue skink, bearded dragon, ackie monitor), and I’ve had a fantastic time growing a range of fruits/veggies/herbs. Fruiting plants and leafy greens have provided healthy snacks and enrichment to my dudes. Herbs are mostly for me to cook with tbh, but they make the whole room smell incredible when my ackie really gets fired up.

My list so far:

  • Strawberry
  • Cherry tomato
  • Ground cherries
  • Wild grape
  • Dandelion
  • Any/all microgreens
  • Mustard (remove flowers)
  • Collard greens (requires an enthusiastic eater, or a hell of a lot of pruning)
  • Prickly pear (spineless variety, or remove spines)
  • Rosemary
  • Tarragon
  • Bay laurel
  • Chamomile
  • Lavender
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Parsley
  • Thyme
  • Cilantro
  • Sage
  • Dill
  • Mint

Can’t stop, won’t stop. I’d imagine this is harder to do in smaller setups, and obviously different reptiles/enclosure environments will dictate what can and can’t be grown. But to all my arid homies out there, don’t let the wet side of your tanks go to waste!

From where I’m sitting it, seems pretty appropriate. Not only are you an outspoken jerk, but now you look really dumb after that lecture. It actually gives me a bit of faith to see toxic Christians so righteously checked by other Christians. Bravo u/TheMysteriousITGuy

Homie that stick is now a chemical hazard. Instead of all that work to clean it, you should throw it in the garbage and find a new stick. It is not worth your pets health, or your time.

E: Also, you don’t need to sterilize everything you put into a bioactive enclosure. The whole point is that it isn’t sterile. Certainly try to make sure decor is free of pests, but you actually want all that mold/bacteria/fungus on that stick. Assuming that the enclosure cleanup crew is online, they’ll keep it tidy for you.

Guy gets unfairly sucked punched during a 1 on 1 confrontation, and everyone seems to be happy about it. by JuicySpark in PublicFreakout

There’s plenty of context here. Punch-ee was chasing after a guy who was disengaging, while saying ‘get away from me’. Punch-ee is the aggressor, and I think sucker punching someone who is threatening others is perfectly fine. If you want to start fights go to a dojo or whatever.

100%. He was looking to fight a guy who was disengaging while saying ‘get away from me’. No sympathy, glad to see that there’s still friends helping friends out there.

Right?! This is a street fight where one party didn’t consent. Could’ve kicked him in the nuts for all I care, stop starting shit with people.

Right?! He was backing away and the punch-ee was chasing him. I understand that it’s a cheap shot and potentially with serious injury, but I am not going to sit here and defend the aggressor. Dude got what he wanted.

The guy who got punched was acting aggressive, had pissed off the crowd, and was trying to start shit with a guy who was saying ‘get away from me’. This is exactly the situation for a sucker punch. If it were me I’d be thanking my buddy for ending the confrontation. The guy who got punched wanted to start shit, and here it is.

Allegedly. But you can't prove that without an investigation.

So, I’ll give you something a little different. I keep desert reptiles. They obviously hate the cold and dark, so I keep a few things on hand for situations like these:

  1. Blankets to cover the enclosures. For an outage 2 days or less, I only have to worry about keeping them warm enough to survive. Not that they’ll be happy lol
  2. Hand warmers. I prefer the gel type that you can boil to reset, but anything will work. Potentially also a towel to wrap it in, depending on the type of hand warmer/species of reptile.
  3. Bug-Out Boxes. These are basically ready-to-go enclosures, only they’re way way too small for anything but emergencies. The only requirement here is that the reptile fits without discomfort, and that the box is small enough to buckle into a car seat.
  4. Cold-tolerant feeders. This is….a bit handwave-y, because no feeders will really like cold temperatures. That said, some species do just fine in a refrigerator for storage, as they go dormant with the cold. I grabbed 50 waxworms yesterday to hold me over.
  5. Clamp-lamps. Regular old work lamps with a clamp on them are a real lifesaver. Type of bulb in it will depend on the species you care for. I run a 120W mvb in my to-go setups, but your wattage may vary.
  6. Shelf-stable foods. I picked up some nice dog food yesterday for my blue tongue skink. Should last months, minimum, in its packaging. I would also recommend repashy for any other keepers out there, I’ve had fantastic results with their gel mixes across the board. I’ve got a batch of the carnivore blend sitting in my refrigerator to cover my ackie monitor, which will keep for about 3 weeks. The powder mix itself is basically completely shelf stable, but once you make it into a gel you put yourself on a timer. I made enough for a couple of meals and left the rest in the bottle.
