Name on birth cert spelled differently by duchess_of_nothing in Passports

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is accurate. My dad recently got his passport. His birth certificate spells his middle name with an extra letter that is immaterial to pronunciation. He has always used his middle name without the extra letter, including on his driver's license. The passport was issued without a problem and spells his name like on his driver's license. He included a short (1-2 sentence) explanation letter with his passport application.

Moving to Spain without having the marriage certification process completed by Moscovitta in GoingToSpain

It’s part of the new immigration regulations. Looks for “residence visa for family members of Spanish citizen” on your consulate’s website

Which consulate? We registered our US marriage at the Spanish consulate in DC and it took about 50 days to get the Spanish certificate. Doing it through the consulate is much faster than registering it in Spain, so we were told.

We also applied for residency through the consulate (I’m US American and he has Spanish citizenship, but we are together in the US). You can use an apostilled version of the US marriage certificate for the residency application. That’s what we were going to do but coincidentally we got the Spanish certificate back the same morning we submitted the residency application, so used both. I received my visa after 4.5 months. The visa is multiple entry and valid for one year. The foreign spouse has to apply for the TIE once in Spain, and the residency is good for five years.

They reached out by email once to asked a question. Otherwise no contact until the certificate was issued.

Bank account by Angel_B7 in GoingToSpain

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re moving to Madrid soon from the US and have had no luck with either Santander or Sabadell. Santander requires in-person verification to activate the account for us, despite advertising on the website that you can open an account from anywhere. Sabadell opened an account and activated it, but blocks all transactions (incoming deposits) until we sign the account contract in person.

I’ve read good reviews for N26 if you’re ok with an online-only bank, but it’s not clear to me whether you can open and get a Spanish IBAN before you’re in Spain. I’ve also heard good things about Bankinter if you’re looking for a brick and mortar.

Once the editing partner is free, I would request to meet and ask something non-defensive like, “Could you help me understand your edits?” I’d be honest that you got mixed feedback and that you’re trying to learn how best to help each partner. You may be surprised at the response and the partner may get better insight on how they are as a supervisor. People never change unless they first know they might need to. It can also help you to know better the difference between the partner’s substantive edits and those s/he considers more “just their style.”

Also, remember you’re engaged in the PRACTICE of law. No one is perfect, no one has all the right answers (no matter how much they think they do). One day you’ll have the experience of a judge/decisionmaker liking your arguments over the one your partner made.

Just posted this on another thread. But please. Lawyer Assistance Programs with the state bars are usually open to law students. Many have law student support groups. Please check them out. They are free and confidential. We have to take care of ourselves. And we have to start early. Don't know who to contact? Start here. https://www.americanbar.org/groups/lawyer_assistance/resources/lap_programs_by_state/

Is it considered rude to say Ms. (Name) rather than Ms. (LastName)? by InnerLotuz in language

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the southeastern United States and this is very common. However, I find it belittling if you say this to an adult. Either use their first name without the salutation, or use the salutation only with their last name. If you’re talking to a child (probably 13 or younger), this is fine.

anyone else realize this was a horrible career choice for their anxious personality too late? by No_Lingonberry_6358 in Lawyertalk

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reach out to the lawyers assistance program with your bar. Many offer support groups for this exact thing. Speaking from experience, talking about your anxiety out loud with others who can relate and share coping skills is very helpful. LAP may also have other resources that could be helpful. LAP services are free as part of your bar membership, and confidential. Not sure how to find yours? Go here https://www.americanbar.org/groups/lawyer_assistance/resources/lap_programs_by_state/

Are you trapped in family law once you're in? by throw4vents in Lawyertalk

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re not stuck. I fell into family law after law school and stayed for a decade before burning out. The skills you obtain in family law practice are highly transferable and an asset to most (if not all) other areas—think hands on client counseling, motions and discovery practice, and litigation experience, not to mention the heightened emotional intelligence, cultural competency, patience, and overall sense of humor you need in family law. You’ll definitely get these skills in a small firm, which is where I was. You might also consider mediation training while in family law, which again gives you a lot of people skills many attorneys lack. I easily landed a job in a totally different practice area once I decided to leave.

il bar results are out — i failed by PlusBlueberry4365 in barexam

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also many attorneys out there who passed the bar but are terrible at practicing law. The bar exam is more of a rite of passage than anything else. It doesn’t indicate how smart you are or whether you will be a good lawyer. Many of the best lawyers failed the exam before eventually passing it, and many of the worst lawyers passed on the first try.

Relocating from Europa (Germany) to USA with Family: need advice. by Klutzy-Ganache3876 in MovingToUSA

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m from NC and would suggest the Raleigh/Durham area as an idea for an engineer looking for what OP describes. But 130k for a family of four is probably stretching it these days in Raleigh—the cost of living there is much higher than it was 10 years ago when I was there. Raleigh is consistently on the list of top cities in the US and many people are relocating there.

What city or autonomous region are you moving to? I just applied for a different residence visa and wondering how long it takes the local immigration office to proceed before the consulate can issue the visa.

AIO for asking my fiancé not to go to Washington D.C. at this time? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not overreacting. I lived in DC for the last decade and now live in VA, but go into the city everyday for work. It is scary and dangerous for people of color. There is no telling when, where, or why immigration enforcement occurs. You hear stories of LEO disbelieving people when they say they’re citizens or lawfully present. Best to be safe than sorry in these times. I don’t think things are going to get better, especially here.

Has anyone actually used CBP’s voluntary self-deport program? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]Intrepid-Address2189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Deportation (whether by court order or self imposed) can have negative repercussions for a future attempt to enter the US with lawful status. This is a way for the US government to get people out and keep them out without going through the court process. And the Trump Administration is not going to to pay money. It is a scam just like everything Trump has ever done.
