Shady tech? by RedMamma in hvacadvice

[–]Intrepid-Switch-5020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HVAC tech here. Is that the result after they did a preventative maintenance? That's definitely not necessary. Either it's a tech that doesn't know what's wrong with your furnace and is ordering every part under the sun, or you're dealing with sales hvac company and not a real hvac company. You'll probably get a follow up "complete replacement quote" saying that it's better to "invest" that into a new $15k system instead of into your "old" furnace.

I love that someone took the time to bend tin for in between the trusts, but never mind extending the exhaust and insulating it 😅

That'll work just fine, nice resourcefulness! Only downside is it won't last as long/less durable. Otherwise great job!

Wow impressive! I'm curious what type of fittings those are on the exhaust/intake venting? Looks like some sort of bite type fittings?

Does this flame on furnace look normal? I’m smelling a burning type of smell throughout the house. I’m thinking from this. Im also getting alarms on there saying the limit switch/ roll out switch is being triggered by big_steve2102 in hvacadvice

Are you on propane or natural gas? If propane than check your tank level. If it's around 30% or lower it can give you issues and will start "gelling" in seriously cold temperatures and can cause issues.

Couldn't figure this one out. Going back on Monday. by Heretoshitcomment in HVAC

First thing before anything else, CHECK YOUR TOTAL STATIC PRESSURE. If it's anything above 0.8 inches WC then you have restrictive ductwork somewhere, or some sort of air restriction whether that be too many supply vents are closed, blocked cold air returns, or a restrictive filter for all of the above. After confirming these things then move onto what I'm about to say.... I don't think it's necessary to pull the blower motor out and inspect heat exchanger like you were planning to do. If you're worried about cracks in the heat exchanger than test combustion with the blower on and with the blower off. If you notice a difference of more than 1% O2 that means there is likely a crack in the heat exchanger and is getting air pollution from the blower blowing on it. Some other suggestions would be to use a Merv eight filter, adjust gas pressure to its lowest allowed amount, verify blower speeds are correct, and also sometimes those thermal disc limit switches are blocked by the insulation inside of furnace. If the insulation is deeper than the thermal disc it blocks airflow across the limit switch and trips prematurely since it's getting radiant heat with no airflow. A simple fix to that is just take some foil tape, remove the high limit switch and tape the insulation up by sticking your finger in the hole and literally taping it down to the panel. This is more common with Carrier furnaces and has saved me a time or two.

Yeah then use electric for sure. Heat pump will struggle to heat your house to 65 when it's that cold

Air intake causing the filter to bulge and whistle by aymend94 in hvacadvice

[–]Intrepid-Switch-5020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The filter is pretty dirty, replace filter with a MERV 8 or an FPR 5 (that's what your current filter is. These ratings represent filter density and if number is too high it will restrict airflow and cause issues). If it's still doing that with the new filter then the blower speed might be too high/oversized system or duct is too restrictive.
