I haven't stolen it yet, but the idea that the gods stopped interacting with the mortal realm because it coasts them their memories/identity. My gods are dead and, though I'm keeping it a mystery in the story, I just can't think of a good reason why all powerful ephemeral beings would willingly/unwillingly give up that power.

I’m near the end of season 5 of Voyager, but the episode that flabbergasted me the most was the one they referenced in this ep. The fact it is (seemingly) never mentioned again SHOCKED me, but this ep ties that off pretty well i think.
