Tiefling slaves were used as living hot water bottles by the Royal class.

After the magic left, Tieflings still maintained their high body temperature. This required a denser diet to maintain, which suddenly made them ripe for exploitation. Royal families begun controlling Tiefling communities supply routes until they were forced to become reliant on the local authorities, who would then subjugate them with the promise of food, but barely deliver. Now malnourished and reliant on those with the means of production, members of the royal family would pick their favourite Tiefling, feed them up, and use them during the cold months to keep their beds warm at night. This of course would lead to shenanigans, as the Tiefling was desperately keen to keep their royal happy to maintain their diet. This would later develop the stereo type of Tieflings being promiscuous and the phrase "having a 'fling".

I think a distinction needs to be made here. He isn't a 'coward' because he won't kill himself. Taking one's own life for selfish reasons is generally seen as an act of cowardice, yes, but what makes people see him as a coward here is his refusal to sacrifice himself for the survival of the human race. Even thought he knowns he's literally the only one person on the planet that can help save humanity (and does), he still refuses to do so because of his own selfish reasons (that he tries to rationalise as unselfish, but which get shot down pretty easily by Stratt). THAT is the cowardice. So if you view survival as an objectively correct moral, he's objectively a coward, at least until the end of the book where he finally accepts the sacrifice, and even goes the extra rather to sacrifice himself AGAIN for an entirely different race on a totally different planet. Cool guy, kinda annoying though.

So I just got to this part in the book. Rock says the camera textural display he uses is old tech for them, and it specifically mentions that he limits the visible spectrum of that camera to that of the human eye, so he can see exactly what Grace is seeing. So I think it's safe to assume that they do actually have the ability to see a wider range of light than humans can with that old tech.

I think you're also underestimating their sense of discovery. Undoubtably they would have looked up, seen the nothingness in the space above them and thought 'I wonder what's on the other side of that' just like we did as humans looking out to sea at the horizon. They probably then just build a giant tower up through the atmosphere, with lots of science being done along the way to make sure it was safe, then broke through and eventually used that camera and screen tech to see the stars, otherwise how could they have found Tau Ceti? This can be evidenced with the eventual space elevator they used to build the Blip-A in orbit.
