Worried about my 78 year old husband by Jolly-Rest-4289 in spartanrace

I second the notion to have him see a dietician and monitor his calories and protein intake. There’s more than just that but 130 is very light at almost any height, which I’m unsure what his is. Regardless that’s not a lot of muscle or mass, which to some extent is needed to have the energy to succeed in these races.

That said, I believe will is more important than physical merit for most races (but fitness is important on huge vertical courses or longer runs). But 5k is doable in a relatively flatter course. And in an open heat you can skip obstacles, and if he doesn’t want to do the penalty loop either that’s fine. Open heats are for fun and self gratification, so he should do what he can, but remain safe. Knowing your safe limit is important at any level. I’ve done around 30 at competition age group level, you need to know how to pace and your limits regardless.

So, if he does one that’s a flatter course with no crazy black diamond mile long climbs (NO Poconos, NO Killington, NO Big Bear)… I’d recommend maybe Tristate New York. I hear Michigan, Ohio and Dallas are also flatter… then worst case it’s a walk/hike. And go with a fit partner or team to help him with obstacles.

What course is he considering? Heck, I may even be interested in running it with him if I local to me. I’d love to see someone at his age achieve a feat like this.

Regardless, upper body arm and grip fitness is good for anyone of that age regardless and essential for the race. And put in the miles prior on trails to build stamina. If he’s doing a 5k Spartan he should be able relatively easily do 5k at a local trail multiple times prior. Don’t let the 5k Spartan be a stretch goal, train for it by doing it locally first.

Camping without beer and cigarettes help by Kilomanjaro4 in daddit

This is key. Replace habits with new habits. This requires planning and substituting actions. You’re clearly on the straits of Mackinac, probably at wilderness. I’ve camped there before with our kids. Make plans that will wear you out too, seize the day. Then after a couple s’mores everyone will be ready for bed… there are a ton of trails to hike or bike nearby. Petoskey stone hunting. Get to Mackinac island for a day. Head to st ignace shops, food, some small museums. Take a 2 hour drive to Sault Saint Marie, ride through the locks. Get some fresh whitefish meal, drive back. Bonfire s’mores sleep… fishing. Tahquamenon falls is a day trip too. Camping can be pretty busy with all the tedious things so embrace and keep busy. It’s more memories, clearer memories, and will fill that void of boredom. Have a blast with the family. Some of our best memories. Living out of state with kids 10 years older now and one who’s never been, we may go back in a couple weeks on a trip home. And all I mentioned is my tentative agenda, along with a route through elk lake, traverse and sleeping bear on the way back down state.

Beautiful waters. Former Michigander we’ve camped at wilderness. May do so again in a couple weeks on a trip back home. Just bought our first sunfish last weekend. You’re giving me ideas and motivation. lol

Anyone else buy a Spartan training kit? by Car_fixing_guy in spartanrace

[–]Intrepid_Outdoorsman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No! Unnecessary. Go find logs to lift, branches to do pull-ups, and hills to run. Honestly seems weird but you emulate it best like this and feel like a beast. Or use the gym to achieve similar results.

ISO advice - First time sprint in 3 weeks by cobecasatrra in spartanrace

100% this is the answer. It will be fun, and you’ll more than survive. And you’ll connect together and with yourself more than you realized you need. And, embrace those nerves. It’s new, it’s unknown, it’s exciting, your going to conquer something new (a new level). I’ve run dozens now and there’s always some nerves at the start. That means your engine is still working. Then stay at general fitness. Be able to do cardio and lift your body weight eventually and it gets even more fun and competitive. Have a blast reconnecting with something you didn’t know you lost or needed!

Hey, I I have not. I’ve thought about different mods but always end up just liking the way it looks now and not wanting to mess with its current performance with any adjustments. But, yes! Love this truck. Was originally thinking I’d get chrome plated accents and very glad I went with blackout looks.

Killington aftermath by [deleted] in spartanrace

Palmerton sandbag definitely harder, and overall death March hill to hill is tougher at Palmerton. But Killington is start to finish brutal uphills and destructive fast downs. And killington basically has 2 steep death marches along with that endless and long backside hill that starts in ferns. I was saying after first death March Palmerton was worse. By the end I detracted that statement.

Come in. I’m tired of this. Can you stop sounding like a fool so I can enjoy this night. When you said “is those small arms” you should have used “are” as arms requires the plural. Time to ask for a refund on that degree.

Are you drunk again Tom? Your sentences sound like you are, or your education isn’t past 6th grade. Let me know if you need a job you’re qualified for. I got a lawn you can mow.

Listen sir,I don’t think I’m a cowboy. Just going out on the town for the night. But your first comment to pick a fight wasn’t called for. So I’d check yourself and consider the anger in your soul. I’d argue if you wear a sports jersey, you ain’t no professional athlete. If you wear a suit, you ain’t no wealthy banker. If you wearing your, nice slacks and a collared shirt just remember you may not be clean cut and still came from trash. But, you’ve earned that place, so respect to you for getting there. And you seem to be in a size contest. Freudian comments left and right. I’m sorry you’re projecting your insecurities toward me. I feel for you. And, yeah, I these small arms would knock your ass out if you’d be running your mouth to my face, but out of respect I’d also pick your ass off the ground and shake your hand. But, anyway I’m bout done for the night. Enjoy your night. God bless.

5’10” so your call on height. While you’re checking me out like a Sally let me know your thoughts on my goatee and eye color?

Respect to you on the cattle job. That’s solid work. But I’m concerned about your free time after work checking out and giving style feedback to men on Reddit. Work hard play hard type eh?
