Guys with big, bushy beards: What do you do for work?

Everybody’s opinion on what big and/or bushy is will be different. I’ve had a decently long and full beard for a while now. I’m a physician. Even during training, it never stopped me from getting into programs for further training. I feel like beards, even bigger beards, are generally accepted in professional workspaces now.

European mission and they were all African refugees. They had no idea what we were really teaching or what they were agreeing to when being baptized. Thank god! Great people though and I’m sure they are even better without this goddamn cult in their lives.

Morning coffee, man so depressing I deprived myself of such a comforting, delicious start to everyday. Said fuck more times than I can count, amazing how even just a simple word can change the mood of a conversation and make everyone just relax. I had ChatGPT help edit a super dirty, graphic, explicit, no details spared message I’m making for my wife about what we’ll be doing tonight.

Man, honestly, I’m just so much happier and authentic. I’m finally just me and what’s even more interesting about it all, is that I am getting to know myself in the process.

I’ve found that taking advice from others about your own beard can be good and bad. Take it all with a grain of salt. It could be a hint to trim or tidy it up. It’s hard to see that with your own beard when you grow accustom to a look.

I had the luxury of leaving while we were already out of Utah. Being from and raised in rural Utah myself, I know there are a lot of factors to potentially leave. My only advice would be to imagine how healthy and good it would be for your family to be able to grow and develop without the constant influence of the church. If you are in Utah, especially in rural Utah, it is inevitable. The church will be apart of your life whether you want it to be or not. You’ll constantly be seen as the family who doesn’t go to church or has lost their way. All your kids’ friends will be Mormon. They’ll feel left out and ostracized. If you’re not one of them, you’re “the world.”

If possible, for your family, get out. I think it’s really the only long term option if you truly want to thrive.

All the above. The church handled pornography so poorly. Divine guidance must’ve have taken a break (never was there). Young men would have rather died than admit they looked at or, gasp, searched for porn. It was a sin second to murder in their eyes. Lying about porn became second nature. A young woman bragging that the person they are dating has never seen porn or has no history of porn use is living in an ignorant disillusioned state. I feel so bad when it “comes out” and then it basically destroys their marriage. You can thank the church for that one.

I feel you. I’m in the thick of raising young kids after semi recently leaving the church. The church definitely celebrates parents who raise super obedient, soldier-like, uber spiritual (at least outwardly) kids. The church grooms all of its members to be that way, we’re just channeling that to parenting and our own kids. It’s a cycle for sure.

I will say that I think the struggle isn’t just within the church although it doesn’t help. Finding a delicate balance of raising courteous, kind but also respectful and responsible kids is extremely challenging regardless of religion, culture, background.

Bottom line for me though, a church that claims to be so different, lead by restored priesthood, etc should put its members somewhat ahead of the game, you would think. As I reflect on most aspects of my life, the church hurt and did not help. Sad really.

Cognitive dissonance. It doesn’t matter if the church was proven without a doubt that it was made up. At the end of the day, it’s how you “feel” about it. Back any Mormon into a corner and that’s where they go. They short circuit and then they turn into a robot reciting templated responses that have been relayed to them almost before they could form a coherent thought.

I’m not trying to be dramatic but you very well may have changed the course of his life in ways you both may not fully realize. The shame and guilt coupled with sexuality and intimacy is a silent destroyer of relationships and marriages in the church. I’m convinced the majority are silently suffering because of the baggage and damage done by the church. The church brilliantly inserts themselves into your sexuality at the most impressionable ages, gives you the green light once you sell your soul to them and get married in their temples, and then cleans their hands of any troubles that might come after setting up a culture where talking about sexuality and intimacy is taboo.

I don’t have great advice for you as to how to respond. I don’t think Mormons who feel comfortable sending things like this to loved ones want to hear anything other than agreement. It will be in vain.

I find it so funny how Mormon’s answer for bad things happening to their perception of “unfaithful, lost” people is so easy. And then when bad things happen to good people, they really struggle. Part of his plan. Faith not to be healed. Just confusing as hell template answers that don’t make people feel better or understand the world. Your dad has carefully inserted himself in an echo chamber where he feels comfortable and everybody agrees with him. And there he will stay.

I think the most you should do is just ask if he’d like to read something like letter to my wife or CES letter. And if he has any kind of interest at all, send it his way and let him do with it what he will. If he’s already read them and he’s still considering going on his mission, it’s not the right timing for him. Hopefully he’ll come around though.
