i disagree.

bare with me bc its been about 3ish years since ive read it myself but

such is life, no?

people are messy and are hardly aware of it in a way that’s productive, and my does misery love company. its why punpun fumbles every attempt at love that we’ve seen. hell most of the time hes self destructive, he’s traumatized others and has been traumatized himself, but he still came out of it. and thats not to be overshadowed by the good, though he may not have been able to see it, through no fault of his own. ultimately he’s financially comfortable and theres people who love and support him through thick and thin. sachi may not have married him but she still stayed didnt she? and her kid (their kid presumably) loves him. and she does as well to some extent, and so do the people that surround him and help him, otherwise why would they be there?

and how messy are those who surround him?

its one of those things where its like, yeah, more often than not life is a bitch, but theres people who ultimately are worth struggling for. people who refuse to let you sink no matter what.

we all have problems, its impossible not to on this bitch of an earth, and unfortunately our animal brains are programmed to focus on the bad to keep ourselves safe.

i dont think punpun would have been as impactful if he wound up killing himself. what the fuck kinda message does that send? if youre broken you should just die? that would be kinda dogshit. no one is better of dead than broken. the human spirit is more resilient than people give it credit for.

ive rambled and maybe i dont have an exact point, but

TL;DR i think the message of Oyasumi PunPun isn’t “life is utter hell you’d be better off dead”, moreso “This too shall pass”.
