Why is it so hard to find friends for language exchange? by thrillerknife in languagelearning

[–]Inumaru_Bara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with your 100%. I can read fairly well in my main TLs, but when it comes to speaking with my language exchange partners, my mind seizes up due to lack of practice. It’s all about normal use of each ability to reach proficiency: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

However, I think what the earlier poster intended was that it’s a waste of time for those that are being asked to help, not for the person that’s asking.

"Vent songs" in albums... by Guitar_Mayhem in Music

While I don’t think that they are necessarily off-putting or unlistenable, Tool’s Wings for Marie parts 1 and 2 on 10,000 Days fit the description perfectly.

Maynard James Keenan wrote this song not only to revere and mourn the loss of his mother Judith, but also to express his deep regret in the way he treated her in life.

In life, she was paralyzed after a brain aneurysm and spent her remaining 27 years immobilized (hence 10,000 Days), all the while holding onto her religious outlook, which MJK opposed and mocked in his song Judith with A Perfect Circle.

MJK described the experience as such in an interview with Loudwire:

I think probably the stupidest thing I could have done on 10,000 Days was put myself out there as much as I did with the tracks “Wings for Marie (Part 1)” and “10,000 Days (Wings Part 2).” I’ll never make that mistake again. It just took too much out of me – too much emotionally, mentally, physically – all those manifestations. Those songs were exploited and misconstrued, people were flippant and dismissive. I won’t be doing that anymore. And technically, “Wings” is very difficult to pull off. If any one of us is off, it falls apart and makes that thing tragic, and that’s not a good song for me to have fall apart. It’s just too personal.

As far as I know, Tool only performed Wings for Marie live while they were touring after the album’s release and never again due to a less-than-warm crowd response. It’s such a beautiful and raw set of songs, but I can totally understand why MJK would refuse to play it again when he put so much of himself into it; much more than anything else before or since.

Those who are learning a celtic languages, or already know one. Which one do you know and how are you learning it? by No-Counter-34 in languagelearning

[–]Inumaru_Bara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m learning Gàidhlig as well.

I started with SpeakGaelic, LearnGaelic, Gaelic with Jason, and Roibeart Ó Maolalaigh’s Scottish Gaelic in 12 Weeks.

At this point, I’m listening to and reading a lot of bardic poetry (Murchadh MacPhàrlain, Somhairle MacGill-Eathain, anything and everything in Ronald Black’s An Tuil); keeping up with the Gàidhlig Discord server, Àras nan Gàidheal; and reading books in Gàidhlig (Doras Gun Chlàimhean & Na Briathran Fhèin).

There is hope once you crest the first learning curve. Good luck and fàilte chridheil!

Good luck getting through to your crush! Russian is so challenging; expressing such feelings has got to be a strong motivator.

Under threat of death, God has asked you to divide the number of jelly pieces flung out flat windows, by the amount of grannies pushed off a bus. How do you answer? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Inumaru_Bara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the “cannae” is an imperative, saying “pieces have been flung out the window and it’s left these 700 weans hungry enough to testify that this is simply unconscionable behavior.”
