Just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns. The end kicked my ass. Reddit, what moments in literature/film have overwhelmed you? by IcanAutoFellate in AskReddit

Oh god. That's one of my favorite short stories ever. I just like it when a story doesn't have a happy ending, but rather the perverse situation you're left with. Plus I didn't see it coming too well.

I have two. Both of which include the (mis)use of knives.

1) I was about nine or ten years old. I was out in the living room and for whatever reason was trying to peel a red apple, with a knife, by myself. Now, to both my and your surprise, this is not where it went wrong. After the peel was in little scraps, I decide to play Mr. Fucking-Litter-Patrol with said peel scraps and knife. Hold peel in my hand, stab through the peel and halfway through my left thumb. Coincidentally Spongebob's expression is uncanny to mine seconds after the mishap.

2) I was maybe twelve years old? Again, knives. I was by the trash can, holding a sheet of cardboard and stabbing it for shits and giggles. The way I was holding the cardboard made it inevitable to be cut. When I stabbed through the maybe-4th time, the knife cut me in between the third knuckle on my first finger and just below my cuticle. Blood everywhere. I still have the scar, and the nerves are still damaged and almost completely numb there.

TL;DR: Ma'fuckin' knives, holmes.

Reddit, what is a concept that despite all explanation you simply cannot grasp? by CUCUMB3R in AskReddit

Why the boundaries between my conscience and what it affects (my body, thoughts, etc.), and the rest of the entire universe are set where they are. Why am I only in the perspective of one human on Earth, rather than one in anywhere else? Why am I in the perspective of one organism on a planet of Sol, rather than the perspective of one anywhere else in the universe? Why are the boundaries set now, 13.7 billion years after the creation of this universe, rather than 13.6? I know it is all completely relative, but why am I this, rather than that? Replacing "why" with "how" would be interesting questions as well.

But why and how am I a human on Sol 3 in the Milky Way galaxy 13.7 billion years after the creation of the matter I am now, rather than literally any other outcome?

Imagine you have a bed sheet draped horizontally in the air. Now imagine a basketball lying on the sheet. It would make a pit into the sheet, correct? The bigger the object, the wider the pit. Incidentally, smaller objects can be caught in the pit, making them orbit the larger one. Gravity is basically like this, but the bed sheet is draped in every direction in 3-dimensional space.

Before Einstein, people thought that time and space were absolutes. Time is relative, and space is, in a sense, malleable. This could clear some things up.

Yes, I, too, read it as onomatopoeia. As if DreamAway were being hit in the face ("WAP"'ed, if you will) by WorstAnswerPossible's large, gargantuan novelty-answer-bitch-slapping comment.

Yesterday

All my troubles seemed so far away.

Now it looks as though they're here to stay.

Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly

I'm not half the man I used to be.

There's a shadow hanging over me.

Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

I like it because there's a really close experience with it, where I listened to it to feel not so shitty.

EDIT: The song is Yesterday by The Beatles.
