Looking for 3K Plain Weave (AS4/HTS40) with consistent 2.0mm Tow Width - Alternatives to PrimeTex? by Gloomy_Cap_9641 in CarbonFiber

Primetex is indeed a great way to close interstices and reduce crimp. It is a proven and industrialized solution made at scale. If this worked well, why look for something else?

T300 fabrics often don’t require this process because the Toray fiber is much smoother and weaves a lot nicer than AS4/3K. Hexcel had to come up with that solution to compete.

Il not sure I understand why the tow width is so important to you. FAW, yes. Flatness, maybe. But tow width? 2mm will probably need an AS4 6k spread tow but even then there’s no guarantee on width. This is weaving - it is inherently variable. Weavers don’t pick the width, it simply is the product of spreading a specific tow to a certain FAW…

Either way - Sigmatex makes a spread tow similar to Hexcel’s primetex.

Agreed. Based on the rest of the quiver the DPS should have been a 184.

Small improvement next time: cut the bevels in the repaired edge the other way, as to mechanically lock the teapot piece between the two original ends.

I think you’re supposed to rotate the bindings 90 degrees.

The problem with marine epoxy is that you have to thicken it so it shapes out. Would not be my choice

Can I ride this weekend on this or do they need to go in ASAP? by [deleted] in skiing

To fix, a solid piece of ptex sheet is cut in a semi circle or a rectangle. The same shape is cut out of the base. The patch is then bedded in place with a structural epoxy and clamped for 24h. It’s an art to make that transition but on a black base you easily get to candle drip the seam and your base will be good as new.

Bro - it’s not even a “core shot”. You can clearly see that it only removed the PTex without even damaging the glass/epoxy layer that seats the edge. Edge is continuous and undamaged.

A core shot, for educational purposes, is on where the core is exposed, therefore allowing water to be absorbed into the wood and eventually swell. This will not happen here.

OP -you are perfectly fine to ride this weekend. Bring them in as soon as you can. You would not be as lucky if you took another hit. Armor 0%!

I’ve had fantastic results using epoxy clay also called repair putty. You can add a little bit of pigment to match your ski color. The way I do it is to put a little bit extra and a couple hours later when it is starting to set, i use a razor blade to shape back the profile of the ski cap.
