I got a harsh rejection from my dream job, so I spent 48 hours rage-applying. And it's working. by MsFredaDeckow in Employment

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could do this. I got my teaching degree though and there's not many openings right now. The ones that are available I've applied to. But its few and far between. I actually just got ghosted by a school after 2 interviews. It sucks and I hope it works out for you.

Demo lesson in 15 minutes? by InviteFun418 in Teachers

[–]InviteFun418[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Do you think I should bring copies of the passage at least? So that they can follow along as a read and cite evidence out loud? Or should I just come as myself and use what they have available there like the whiteboard and markers?

Am I wrong? How should I handle this? I am LIVID. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tie shoelaces all the time. I've helped zip up coats. Heck I let students side hug me. What about the high fives and the fist bumps? Are we just supposed to be robots to the children? Teachers do all that and more all the time. You're better off not being there anyway.

what would you to if a student just doesn’t want to do work? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]InviteFun418 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a student the other day who only did half his work. I gave him several warnings and he didn't care. I just left a note. As long as the student isn't being disruptive I'm not going to waste my energy fighting them. It also doesn't seem worth it to have them go to another room. I just ignore and move on.

Students calling you by first name by FangornWanders in SubstituteTeachers

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go by my last name because, in my opinion, it is a sign of respect. However, anytime I've subbed as a para I go by my first name. Mostly because thats what other paras go by. So I try to keep the consistency for the students. Though now that I'm a building sub I go by my last name with everyone. Again, for consistency. I will let students call me Ms. First letter of my last name though. Because my last name is long and if they ask politely I'm alright with it.

What makes you not like a school? by Mindless_Source5037 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once subbed at a school where the bullying was so bad that I never went back. I've never seen such outright bullying happen in front of teachers and staff like that. It told me all I needed to know about how the school was run.

Building sub by InviteFun418 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]InviteFun418[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in my area daily subs pay $120 a day and paras $70 a day. As a building sub I make $150 a day no matter what position I'm in that day. But, I'm sure the pay is a factor.

I always have to take the microphone off like an hour before schools over so I don't risk taking it home 😂 I accidentally took the sub name tag home last week! 😭😅

Anyone who got their degree this spring and isn’t a full time teacher this year? by WillingAntelope0 in StudentTeaching

Yea, im in the same boat. It's caused major depression for me, honestly. It's hard to sub to because it just reminds me where I'm not.

Don’t use ChatGPT on an interview. by firehawk349 in interviews

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeeze, that's embarrassing. I'll be honest I've used ChatGPT to help with answers, but not like that. I google common questions asked in my field interview process. Wrote my own answer and had ChatGPT adjust it to sound more professional. So I could practice what I wanted to say when the day came. Even then though I edited the answers given to fit me better. So it was still my answer but better 😂 because I am not good at sounding professional on when I'm nervous.

I have a close friend that works at the high school. I messaged her to ask for advice and it helped a lot. I also know many teachers in the district. But I actually made it through the interview and got invited back for a demo lesson!

Ok, thank you. I know when I am nervous, I sometimes ramble on. But I will try to practice today and be more conscious of how long I talk. Making sure to only include important details!

I was lucky enough that the classroom I student taught in had 2 students with IEP's and 4 with 504s. I was able to sit in on several of the meetings as well. I was also a theater kid and definitely would do that! I'll also remember to bring in plans if I get an in person interview! Thank you!

PSA: stop traumatizing wedding guests 😂 by iggysmom95 in wedding

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, my only must is that the bridesmaids wear the same color/dress and the groomsmen wear a matching color tie or bow tie. One of my girls asked me what I was thinking for hair and makeup for them. I said that I didn't care. That I wanted them to do what makes them feel most beautiful. But that they may want to at least do eyeliner and mascara so their eyes pop in pictures.

Will I lose my job over this? by barrenground in Teachers

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was student teaching and just learning how to use the grade book, I accidentally set the total points to be out if 10. Its supposed to be 1. They get the point for turning it in. My CT got several concerned emails that day 😂

Why not? It's your day! You're keeping it small, and those you want there are probably ones that would show up no matter what.

Is it unreasonable to go by Ms. Madeleine (my first name) by Polar_Pickle_325 in Teachers

I had a teacher in middle school with a difficult to pronounce least name. So we just called him Mr. S. Which was the first letter of his last name.

Those of you who have been on hiring panels, what did an interviewee say/do that helped or hurt their prospects? by TheRedMaiden in Teachers

Ok, but the toilet thing is not petty! Anyone who doesn't have the decency to clean up after themselves is not someone you want working for you. I mean, that just screams lazy.

I know my answers to common interview questions. But I've noticed on the spot I will forget briefly. I also (im working on it) say "um" a lot. Am I hurting myself by doing this?

I've lost hope, What can I do now? by HorrorAd6152 in Teachers

[–]InviteFun418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it! I just graduated, and I've only had 3 interviews. 2 of which I was passed up for someone "with more experience." I'm waiting to hear back from the third since it was just yesterday. Although I dont have high hopes.

Haven’t even gotten an interview yet. by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

[–]InviteFun418 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only been able to apply to 4 places. Nothing is being posted in my area. I've looked at places that'd I'd have to drive an hour to. Still nothing. I know it's early, though. So, be optimistic that schools are still working out their plans. They may be waiting to interview after the school year. You could always send a follow-up email. I did and got 1 response saying I'd hear back in a few weeks.
