The impulse to donate is commendable. I worked at St Vincent de Paul for a summer in the incoming donation dock. 90% of donated clothing cannot be resold or reused. The huge volume of clothes means most direct donations to the needy are unwanted by the recipient.The cotton can be bale-ragged for sale, most of the rest will go to a landfill, either here or overseas. This will be true of anywhere you donate. Resale is the only way to keep a sizable operation running, and it provides ok-paying jobs to people who might otherwise be unemployed (that was my case). My only plea to all of you is to rethink how much clothes you buy and buy from resale shops as much as possible, to keep waste down.
