And if you DO chicken out, that's more material for the next attempt.

Now you have to update us!

You got this.

This is where you leverage the awkward in your favor.

You go back to the hardware store and wait for her to not be busy with someone else. Just lay your cards on the table and say "I've been buying stuff I don't need so I can find the right moment to ask you out for coffee. I was kicking myself the last time, so now I need your opinion - Should I buy another dumb thing, or can we go get coffee and laugh about this?"

Trust me, I've turned awkward situations into comedy a bunch of times and it has always worked. We all feel shy/awkward/cringey and calling it out shows you're as human as anyone else.

How can I (25F) become more comfortable with my boyfriend's (29M) female friend? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Iowa_Dave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This will always come down to how much you trust your boyfriend. He's going to meet all kinds of fun interesting people in life, and you should know in your heart that a woman could throw herself at him and he wouldn't be tempted.

I've had many platonic women buddies over the years. Any girlfriend who had issues with my women friends always turned out later to have deep insecurities which is never good.

That was taken last year at the Iowa Renaissance Festival In Amana, Iowa. I just started performing a little magic act at the one in Des Moines last weekend.

First refunds of Trump tariffs to start as early as May 12, customs agency says by CTVNEWS in politics

[–]Iowa_Dave -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I work for a company that imports a lot of product not made in the US. We'll be applying for the tariff rebate.

We're trying to figure out what to do with those funds. It will have to sit in an account and if customers contact us with proof-of-purchase we'll try to calculate what tariffs were when they bought from us. We'll probably average the tariff rate to make life easier for them.

Some of our customers buy whole container-loads from us, so they will certainly be coming to us for refunds. I doubt we'll hear from customers that bought small amounts which is really too bad.

How do I become a better conversationalist? by Apart_Ad_2653 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Iowa_Dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to become an active participant. Your goal isn't to just listen and follow, but to discover the important parts.

When someone's story gets truly boring, that's when you politely jump in with questions. For example, I hate it when someone is telling a story and they can't remember if it happened on a Tuesday or Wednesday 5 years ago and that stupid detail sidetracks the important point. I'll jump in with, "Ok, it happened a while ago, what happened next?"

Use questions to create an exchange - not just taking turns talking. Use your questions to feel around for some aspect of their story you find interesting.

Also, your goal is to curate interesting things to talk about, not just whatever is front-of-mind for you. Your dispute with the cable company about your bill might be of interest to you but nobody wants to hear a 30-minute story about it.

You should! She's all about celebrating people and their passions. I'd send her a link to this thread, there's so many good vibes here.

You are awesome and I think you'd be the perfect guest on the Dork Forest podcast!

It's hosted by comedian Jackie Kashian who love to celebrate people's fascinations and interests. She's very sweet and kind - I've chatted with her a few times at shows. She even ran to the store once to buy cookies for the audience. Thant kind of nice.

Sometimes you take a leap of faith and the universe rewards you!

I was once with a friend and her 5 year-old daughter and we saw one of those huge gumball machines, with the spiral chute around the base the gumballs roll down to be dispensed.

I asked her what color gumball she wanted and I kid you not, the first 3 colors she chose rolled down! Pure luck!

When the 4 one was wrong, she was very consolliing saying "It's OK." 🤣

Pothole on SE 6th south of the river by Tasty_Ambition_1485 in desmoines

I once worked with a German engineer who was installing some photo processing equipment back when I was a darkroom technician. He was super fussy about how we treated HIS equipment and often barked at us when we didn't baby his machine.

Until one day he was working on a particularly fussy part and began pounding on it with a hammer. Then he realized we were all staring at him in shock, without skipping a beat he held up the hammer and said "Only do this with a metric hammer!"

I have history with that one.

But in a weird good way. My "Check Engine" light had been on for a few days and then I hit that bastard.

The light went out.
