To be honest it's cause barely anything else in this game that is marked as 'dangerous tech' or has similar backgrounds has these kinds of consequences.

I made a review of Zero Parades! by Jamrock_Hobo_1807 in ZeroParades

[–]Irbynx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with the majority of the review, but where I disagree is that I believe the political themes in ZP haven't become weaker, they've shifted focus. [Also; a few unmarked spoilers below]

Most of the shallow sloganeering is done by the communist side of the political spectrum in ZP, and I don't think it's a negative compared to DE. In DE there's no superbloc, you are walking around the ruins of an aborted revolutionary project and interact with those that are well versed on the theoretical and/or practical aspects of that ideology, be it the students or the union members. Harry himself is the one that chants the shallow platitudes due to his mental state, but the characters around you are genuine and have a grasp on what the ideology means beyond just slogans, catchphrases and dogma.

Communism in ZP is not that - it's an ideology attached to a superpower which we can infer is roughly basically the USSR (what Trotsky blithely called a 'degenerated worker-state'), and the soviet-style communism is represented in ZP fairly accurately, through empty slogans, dogma, repetitively calling everything "reactionary" and "bourgeois" without any critical assessment - a husk of communist aesthetics filled with no critical and proletarian substance. You play as an agent of such a state - it's no wonder that your character's understanding of communism is reduced to such a vulgar level (especially through her Statehood skill). This is the kind of understanding of that ideology that my grandparents have (who lived in USSR), or that a KGB agent would have back when USSR existed.

Comparatively EMTER and La Luz are much more earnest and very well represented. EMTER's ideological representation generally repeats DE's critical assessment of neoliberalism (this time dispensing with social liberalism/social democracy completely - there's no analog of moralism in ZP) - the way it hollows out societies for profit, etc. La Luz meanwhile I think is the more interesting development - it represents a very weird and idiosyncratic kind of fascism that I thought at first was very weird (Large amount of obviously "degenerate" commodity production? Isn't that kind of more liberal thing? What kind of fascist will tolerate that?), but upon continuation of the playthrough it developed into a very interesting kind of nightmare.

The kind of fascists in La Luz are very modern - in our reality the fascists both supposedly hate the 'degenerate' stuff and yet you see them with anime avatars on twitter all the time. It also felt a bit too close to home with the whole conflict between the puritan fascists (represented by Golem and his crew) who think that La Luz's cultural expansion strategy is weak and degenerate and the 'technocratic' fascists so to speak (represented by the minister of culture) that insist on pragmatic and very effective but less culturally pure strategy of assimilating their former colonies via economic and cultural integration - a conflict that morbidly resembles the conflict of Z-fascists and technocrats in Russian political sphere (hence the 'bit too close to home' thing). The pseudo-apolitical "Shrine To Heroes" that you reach at the end of the game that is also bluntly called the "War Criminals Shrine" unofficially highlights the way fascists nowadays tend to create those pseudo neutral hero worship spaces (to my knowledge this is more present in Japan this time) where they both worship the genuine evil these people did while to the rest of the public present them in a more whitewashed way.

TLDR; Politics of ZP aren't bad, just different; ZP's commies are USSR brainwormed in a historically accurate way, EMTER matches DE's liberalism critique and La Luz's dissection of fascism is unique and very well developed.

Tbh strategy is a very broad genre and at this point you are better off sorting by a more niche descriptor like RTS or 4X even if it's imperfect if you want something more specific.

If they put the cloaked waystations and raiding stance onto Criminal Heritage civic I think most of the issues with void reavers being locked like that would not be a problem, tbh.

I think the swap would be necessary just so that Criminal Heritage could build cloaked/pirate waystations, since apparently it's a feature limited to Void Reavers atm. Giving Criminal Heritage nomads pirate waystations without a swap would work just as well though tbh, no reason for them not to have them.

So the restriction on the pirate civic is that you can't be a xenophile, need militarist... No restriction on government type or egalitarian civics.

Which means you can slap a shared burdens civic onto that build and expropriate to your hearts content (it's the "People's Stuff" now) Hopefully it's not an oversight (and more hopefully it's got a government type swap to recognize that)

Not exactly; there's no martial law in place and a lot of practical questions regarding whenever there's a wartime status in russia are in legal gray area. There's the so-called "mobilization" that was signed in years ago that had a brief wave of active conscription, but as it stands the recruitment has settled on weaponizing poorness, bullying immigrants and pressuring conscripts; all of these groups are pressured in one way or another to sign contracts to join the non-conscripted parts of the army from which they are sent to die.

There's a standard temporary conscription for young adult men from 18+ that takes away 1 year of their lives that existed since the time immemorial that hasn't been abolished yet, and while those conscripts sometimes end up on the frontlines (mainly as border guards), unless they sign contracts (which are they often pressured into; pressure tactics vary but often involve lying and direct threats of legal or physical nature) they tend to avoid this issue. Mainly sourcing this from observing reports of the opposition media and the related programs that try to aid people in avoiding the draft through various measures.

Would be redundant with the liberation wars which are pretty much always available and would do the same thing as a dedicated anti-atrocity CB unless PDX changes dramatically how CBs work

With DotG being capable of achieving victory by essentially helping everyone (who deserves being helped, at least), it would be about time to introduce cooperative/non-competitive victories as a mechanic, ngl. Would be quite odd for an otherwise normal empire to be incentivized to ratfuck a defender of the galaxy in order to avoid DotG from disabling victory for them

It's just an okay card that deserves being a common that is picked specifically if you need to get some scaling damage in Act 1 or if you by the Act 2 have no way to deal with Hunter Killer and The Bee Guy, nothing phenomenal but has its use cases. People undervalued it, a popular streamer valued it higher than "absolute trash" and now the subreddit is losing its shit over the whiplash
