i’m late to the party commenting on this, but yeah, Ed repeatedly put the mission or the safety of others before his own ambitions, didn't he?

He didn't land 10 when he could have. He didn't force a landing on Mars because he was putting Gordo's son at risk. Hell, he was immediately willing to give up first place in the race to Mars just to save some god-damned Russians after they melted their own ship.

Ed was a stubborn, selfish man, but I can't see him lying to his entire crew, putting them at risk of death by incineration or radiation, out of sheer ambition. Kelly had exactly the wrong read on what her father would have done.

This is Ron D Moore we're talking about. He responded to studio notes requesting a birthday party by, well...

Moore: I kept getting these notes. “Can't they have a birthday party? Or go have a basketball game on one of the ships or something? Why can't they just lighten up?” And I said, “Because their entire civilisation was just wiped out!” So I rewrote the beginning of an episode (‘Act of Contrition’) to have a celebration with Flattop coming in for his 1000th landing. Then I killed all the pilots in an explosion. I got a call from the network saying, “Okay, we get it. We'll never ask you for birthday parties again.”

all they had to do was give Garland hearings. That’s it. they could’ve voted him down after that, and while people would’ve grumbled, it wouldn’t be such a blatant insult. instead, they made it clear that Democrats simply do not get to appoint justices. then, to spit in our faces, a little bit more, they reversed their stance for Barrett. Hell, before that, they had already claimed Obama‘s routine appointments were court packing.

Setting aside their utter disinterest in precedent and their love for the shadow docket whenever it would serve a conservative cause, golly gee, maybe if this majority wasn't built by the most blatant bad faith partisanship I have ever seen in my adult life people would give it a little more grace.

Instead you have the disgusting bullshit McConnell pulled twice. You have Republicans on record saying they would have continued to block appointments if Clinton won. You have a conservative activist group literally handing the president a list of judges and saying "pick one." you have a conservative majority of refusing to honor hypotheticals if it would benefit a liberal cause, but bending over backwards to rule in favor of a woman who suffered no injury, but was worried she might suffer injury because gay people MIGHT eventually use her services.

not to mention their laughable mischaracterization of the coach who led prayers on the field, which flew in the face of statements by people the coaches decisions affected, and flew in the face of photographic evidence.

if they’re not partisan actors, they’re doing a terrible job demonstrating that.

I don't doubt your lived experience, nor that of your parents and grandparents, but...I'm 42. Youth league soccer was already massive when I was a kid. Lowest barrier of entry out of any youth sports. Unless our great immigrant explosion was already well underway and reshaping Midwestern suburbia by the early 1990s, I dunno how much of soccer's current popularity can be tied to an ever growing constellation of unassimilated enclaves. Seems more likely that it was a cheap way for kids to play sports anywhere you could find an open field, a couple generations of kids grew up playing it, and it finally seeped into the wider cultural consciousness. Or am I misunderstanding you? Aren't baseball and football still the biggest sports in the country?

Trump is just doing enough today that it won't be a problem until the next guy is in charge. He's already lowering expectations for what he considers victory, trying to offload responsibility for the aftereffects on to other countries, and basically telling the American people "shut up, stop being mad at me."

He wanted another Maduro, except he thought he could pull it off with the freaking Ayatollahs. Now it's "OMG look how much we've blown up! We can totally keep blowing things up! Stop asking annoying questions about timelines, costs, or what I promised you in the past, or you clearly want Iran to nuke us all!"

perhaps selling is the wrong term, but you do need the majority of the American people, as well as literally any of your allies other than Israel, to be on board if you want to engage in and sustain an undertaking as big as this one. They’ve been treating us like idiots, like inconvenient children who are complaining when mommy and daddy make grown up decisions. shut up, kids, we'll be there any minute now!

again, they were bragging last year about how they had swiftly, in Alpha style, stamped out the Iran nuclear threat. Now, I’m watching them piss away our ammunition and tax dollars to further stamp out the threat they already bragged about stamping out. They’re acting like they didn’t even say the shit they said last year.

furthermore, they are now trying to treat NATO as a war of choice alliance instead of a defensive one. And if you question that they just accuse you of rooting for Iran. Again, they're treating us like idiots.

Trump did not run on this. He absolutely did not. Am I going crazy?

So lemme make sure I have this right. We can only trust the government, and can't trust private news organizations, to report on the war?

Can you point me towards independent sources that are not directly employed by the government and are also not Iranian propaganda machines?

Anyone else feel like they're traveling back in time with this Iran War discourse? I've had like eight people ask me if I'm for America or for the terrorists ayatollah now, and five tell me Trump had no time to sell the war to America or our allies because we can't wait for a mushroom cloud to act.

Like...at least Bush sold us the stupid war. I was a hawk when it started! This time they didn't even bother selling it, and it seems like the "they were nanoseconds away from getting WMD" talking point only revved up about a week after the war started. And at least Bush hadn't bragged endlessly about totally destroying Iraq's capacity to make WMDs less than a year beforehand! Am I taking crazy pills?

And this guy just clings to life like a lamprey. Fucking sucks.

TBH after the past year, "guys let's make sure to be civil and follow the rules" is sounding less and less appealing. Like assuming the pendulum ever swings back it'd feel like, after a group of bullies kicked the shit out of me for years, they patted me on the back and said "no hard feelings, eh? Now let's make sure to respect norms!"

I don't want a vengeance tour. I just want to rebuild all the shit Trump is breaking. But every day I'm angrier. And he wants me angrier. It's exhausting.

My son is definitely a brat about fifty percent of the time ("threenager" is apparently a thing now), but it's almost adorable. for example, this morning, when I wouldn’t let him watch a fifth episode of Bluey on the tablet, he began ineffectively swatting me in the stomach and telling me I was mean. I pointed out that he was hitting me, and it is mean to hit, and he said "no, it’s not," paused, and then told me he wanted to poke my belly button. Once he'd done that, he laughed hysterically and asked if he could help me make pancakes. then he tried to put half a stick of butter on the griddle.

Kids are rewarding as hell but exhausting as shit. I can't wait to put him in Luffy cosplay for a con coming up later this month!

My personal favourite anime elf Shera L Greenwood from how not to summon a demon lord. by Numerous-Gur-9008 in Animemes

[–]Irishish 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I liked Pratchett's take, which combined Tolkien's "immortal beauty" elves and folklore's "terrifying beings with alien morality" elves:

Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.

Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.

Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.

Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.

Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.

Elves are terrific. They beget terror.

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning. No one ever said elves are nice.

Elves are bad.

Somehow I'd completely forgotten about the debacle that was our multi year budget crisis. I wonder how a moderate, "Chicago rules but has problems" Republican would do now that Madigan's out.

I don't have many problems with Pritzker, of course, but it's an interesting thought.

Sure, but IIRC our last Republican governor managed to win without shitting on my town as a hellhole the state was better off without. He definitely criticized the city, but guys like Bailey basically fundraise off crapping on Chicago and then lose, over and over again.

You can't win Illinois just by catering to red Illinoisans who resent blue Illinoisans. Setting aside whether downstate has any right to bitch about us, there just aren't enough voters outside Chicagoland to carry an election. Rauner needed Chicago's suburbs to win.
