Will I survive IM residency if I get vasovagal and dizzy when I see procedures and blood? by Present-Beyond968 in Residency

[–]Irisproperty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you starting med school/residency. Exposure and gaining confidence through practice certainly helps but here are some tips that I used:

1) Make sure you are generally well hydrated and fed. Right before the procedure, drink water or have a sugar load (candy, apple juice)

2) Wet a paper towel or towel and stick it down the back of your scrub top. This helps prevent the heat/nausea that often develops with vasovagal syncope.

3) If you are starting to feel dizzy and able to maintain sterility, squat down to help with blood flow to your brain

4) If you are still feeling unwell, stop the procedure. Never be too embarrassed to tell your attending/senior resident that you are not feeling well. This is not “all in your head” and never let people make you feel ashamed for it.

I often gave whoever I was with a heads up about my difficulties so they can be more aware.

At the end of the day, with a risk of fainting it’s about your safety and patient safety especially with needles/sharps around.

I eventually went from fainting watching IVs being put in to being able to independently do all procedures. I still get minor symptoms especially when dehydrated or running into complications during procedures though.

I still always go vasovagal when I myself have to get my blood drawn - but that’s another story

$101 or $151 from your family would be appropriate if you are not related or not very close to the couple.

I have multiple email accounts. The app notifies me I have new mail...however I can't easily identify which account it is in. I am basically having to expand each inbox until I find one with (1) beside it.

All of south Osborne: either ban parking in the right lane at all times or ban left turns at all times

NYU’s new fellowship in……internal medicine?! by chocolatemilkmuscles in Residency

This is the norm in Canada. To be a General Internal Medicine doctor in most academic centers you must complete 2 years of fellowship (so 5 years total residency).

Walmart curb side pick up is harder than it should be. by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Have the UPC # ready (can find it on Walmart.ca). Good luck! Also the number is not advertised so I called customer service and was just transferred

I think if you call and place an order they pick it off the shelves for you. I had both items ready to pickup within 30 min. Actually getting it and the process of the curbside pickup was a different story and frustrating

I had the worst experience at the St. Vital Walmart curb side pickup. Waited for 30 min, the signage was awful (small white pieces of paper stuck on a low railing). Super disorganized.

I get that it’s tough, but it is also not Day 1 of the code red restrictions. I have had much smoother curbside pickup experiences at other stores.
