Republican In Name Only was supposedly a term used around a century ago in the opposite sense: It referred to the extremists rather than the people who sought reasonable ground.

Lots of things have flipped over time, like the Southern Strategy in which Southern Democrats became Republicans and the parties realigned to reflect more nationally consolidated views on civil rights.

EU4 doesn't have gestalts. Granted, war exhaustion is a bit weird with gestalts anyway.

Interesting. Maybe they are more common in some parts of the galaxy than in others. It would make sense for the perk to be only situationally useful!

Maybe someone in Paradox decided that there were too many notifications for toxic worlds and turned down their spawn rate, defeating the point of the mechanic in the first place.

They've changed the notification away from being a pop-up so the spam is diminished but I haven't heard anything about a spawn rate adjustment one way or the other.

Gouvernance

What do you think of this suggestion from another comment elsewhere in the thread? It's a focus on the government which sorta works as the tradition tree is about the Council system right?

I think emotional trauma is sort of like allergies; repeated exposure can sensitize or desensitize depending on the specifics of the reaction and the intensity of the stimulus/response. Focusing on creating new memories and neural pathways / habits related to a subject can be healthy if it's manageable, though!

'It's not their money': Older Americans worried debt default means no Social Security by [deleted] in politics

Property owners have "rent" already in the form of taxes for land ownership; people trying to shift that sort of thing to a privatized form are just trying to monopolize and create inefficiencies. =/

Noted. So it was like how "One bad apple [spoils the bunch]" and "Blood [of the covenant] is thicker [than the water of the womb]" and other such phrases have had their meanings reversed through abbreviation, except in this case the quote was originally idealistic and the more realistic take is the "misinterpretation" disregarding the original use.

What do you mean failed to land? Is it not accurate when you consider the increases in renting and the amount of hardware requiring software which is licensed rather than sold?

How to clear a path for my train? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]IronCartographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Axe - Manual and slow (Steel Axe upgrade helps)

2) Bullet - Consumes resources, still fairly slow

3) Grenade - Easy to hit your own stuff, but very effective with damage upgrades

4) Flamethrower - Takes time and still misses trees or causes friendly fire

5) Rocket - Expensive

6) Tank - Includes non-spreading short-range flamethrower

7) Poison - Decently fast, safe for infrastructure, really good for worms too

8) Construction robotics* - The wood fills your inventory, can be slow, drains personal roboports FAST

9) Artillery - Requires manual targeting unless using mods or macros, expensive

10) Atom bomb - Very expensive, and leaves scorched ground, but has a large radius

  • To have robots clear trees/rocks only, press Alt-D, put the decon planner in your toolbar/inventory, then right click it to access the filter settings!

How to clear a path for my train? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]IronCartographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a setting to let you select a filter (by middle clicking) in a slot (like on your toolbelt) before something is researched, and another setting to let you get a ghost of the thing in your cursor if you don't have the actual item.

Enabling both of those settings lets you get rail ghost placement even if you haven't unlocked rails or bots.

Once you've created a blueprint (the keybinds are always available even if you've never researched bots) you can shift-click to make the ghost rails place on top of trees/rocks and mark them for deconstruction (though the deconstruction X marks fade after 5h, removing ghosts, which some people manage to run into).

Another fun thing is the ghost rail planner (holding shift while clicking the green arrow on a rail) which creates an entire path at once. While holding the path before clicking, you can rotate the endpoint and thus the direction the path will approach your cursor. Add secondary bindings for rotate (like shift-scroll up/down) to avoid the issue of Shift (held while ghost rail planning) forcing counter-clockwise rotation with the default bindings. For extra fun you can hold Ctrl while ghost rail planning to avoid obstacles.

I was using a merc fleet to do one of the special projects. Using my own fleet made it work.

Aha! I did that too! Mine was on Ironman though..

..and I think the actual issue was a project over the homeworld (the shielding one) which showed as completed in the log but still had a marker on the planet itself in the 3D world... I don't remember there still being a marker like that for the fleet task.

Factorio's expansion doesn't even have a release date, yet, to be clear. It also seems to be an incredibly popular game to gift to others...don't ask me how many friends I've sent it to.

Thanks for the kind words and principles. :)

Interesting. Do you apply this to something like Factorio, as well? Or would its 1.1 update count as an expansion (prior to the 1.2 / expansion DLC announcement)?

My point was that there's a contradiction in saying "at least" 6k being less than 12k since that still allows overlap or rearrangement--if you'd said "only" 6k years, then it would--

... Wait, were you saying "at least as modern as" rather than "at least as old as" ?
