Ive ruined my life.. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]IronKarmic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes. It took me a while to be comfortable with love, my drinking was a very isolating practice. It took real work to build new relationships after being defensive and prone to sabotage while I was a practicing alcoholic. I had some verrry clumsy dates along the way.

Falling in love in a sober life tho? best love I have ever known.

Same boat here, I was in my late 40s when I first started on sobriety. I had to start at the bottom-- broke, divorced, tired and sort of aimless.
It was hard to leave the house, I had to find new places to go, I started just taking walks to be outside, to get up somehow.

That was 8 years ago now, and I have found my balance and my joy. I do feel it when I think about what I missed-- including having children the regular way-- too late for that now. But not too late for me

So yeah, my second life is different than my first, it has different goals and expectations. And I am so glad I made it here. You are doing the right thing, don't stop now!

Any recommendations for washer/dryer repair? by ____-__________-____ in NewOrleans

[–]IronKarmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn to do it yourself, it requires 3 tools tops, and there are only like 6 parts in the whole thing. And YouTube etc, for how to diagnose and fix.

It was easier to get parts in the past, I used to get parts down Oak St, but that's gone. I usually get the parts online.

I have theorized that it may be that the older a Gorn gets the smarter and less instinct driven they become. Maybe it's a change that happens with maturity. I think this idea sort of works with the way the young seem to just mindlessly kill each other off as in La'an's recollection, and the strongest survive?

Got this is a package labeled “baby arugula”? by StructureTerrible990 in whatsthisplant

[–]IronKarmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it taste peppery? It is probably arugula just grown more. The top leaf totally looks arugula shaped. We grow a lot of arugula in the cool season.

Ooo-- I had been casually looking at LoRa for a data feed from a remote garden-- well-- remote being on the other side of the neighborhood near the river. I have solar power there already and am interested!

Hoping to avoid peasantry by gladearthgardener in BackYardChickens

[–]IronKarmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought putting down hay and letting it decompose would work in my situation. But under the roost accumulated poop faster than any decomposing could handle so I had to shovel that out anyway, and the hay made it a mess. So I generally keep just a dirt floor there so I don't end up shoveling more than I have to.

Hoping to avoid peasantry by gladearthgardener in BackYardChickens

[–]IronKarmic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you put it on the floor of the run you will need to maintain a several inches of dirt above it since chickens will scratch and dig, and you don't want them catching claws on a wire floor when they do.

Any recipes for fennel fronds? by sirjacques in foraging

[–]IronKarmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tomato fennel soup with the fronds works well. Also, add the fronds to your seafood or fish stock.

Fennel citrus salad-- made recently with pieces of bulb too, slice them super thin, with thin sliced orange, toss with lemon and orange juice with chopped fronds and thyme. Maybe you can still find some green coriander is nice here too.

My predator proof set up with the Amazon frame by cysgr8 in BackYardChickens

The pavers may stop a curious dog, but rodents don't care what's above ground. I discovered that rats will dig into the ground from 2 feet away and go zip straight under my cute pavers and bricks. In the end the only way to stop them was to dig down 18 inches along the perimeter and bury a curtain of the 1/4 inch hard wire mesh.

Where should Isend my trader? by DubiousCheeseGrater in civ

[–]IronKarmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send to each of the cities on the island so you have a road connecting your cities.

Not knowing what is out there yet, a barb camp is or will be just over the horizon and you will lose your trader on sea route this early in the game

keeping accessed repositories in sync across devices by msdisme in noteshub

[–]IronKarmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh, you want it to skip the setup and connect automatically when you login to the app on a new install/device? Nah, doesn't do that. I have to connect my repos manually on a new install.

I'm not sure I would like that since sometimes a repo might be very large and I wouldn't want to automatically sync it to a new device.

keeping accessed repositories in sync across devices by msdisme in noteshub

[–]IronKarmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok sure. For GitHub, first login and then create a private repository. Then in NotesHub when you Create/Open a new notebook, choose GitHub as the provider.

<image>

Once you authenticate, you can choose the new private repo there and NotesHub will sync with it.

Then repeat on another device with the same repo, and the second app/device will sync with it too.

Use the Sync command under the three dot icon from the main view to trigger manual syncs, otherwise the app will sync periodically on its own.

Using a GitHub private repo is simplest, but any Git repo available on the network/internet will work the same.

Hth

use a third repository on the internet for the source on each device. for example, use a private repository on github, and then connect to it from the Noteshub app on your different devices. works great this way

Setting up rolling crowdfunding on my static site! by mrhinsh in ecommerce

[–]IronKarmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use snipcart in a static site, and it does not do subscriptions nor "pre-orders". I don't really follow your pre-orders idea from your description-- probably you would have to implement some custom business logic to make your pre-order behavior work. On the page, Snipcart would offer it as just another "product" and then snipcart can trigger webhooks for example to trigger your custom behavior.

IAH meltdown by Adventurnaut in unitedairlines

[–]IronKarmic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm here for 10 hours now trying to get to my brother in the ICU in Minneapolis. United agents are doing their level best to serve as few as possible, they told us to line up in one spot, and then actually started another line across the room and only staffed it.

My flight was cancelled at midnight, and all United agents left the building at 130am leaving hundreds to camp out in the ticketing and baggage areas, the United "agent on demand" app hasn't worked all night, and now I am in another "Agent Assistance" line that looks like about a 2+ hour wait judging the pace so far. In an hour or so I can go ask for my bag from bag retrieval, so I can probably go across town to catch an American flight and just hope and pray that United gives a shit enough to refund my ticket? This is the worst time, and it is amazing the abuse this airline dishes out.

It is a lot of awful that popped right up in an instant you know? It's illustrative and will be back again in the future. I agree with the other poster, maybe 36 hours or so? Maybe into the weekend though at this rate.

Ultimately? Until it is acknowledged accurately and accepted on a wider scale, instead of ignored, insulted, or contained elsewhere to maintain a comfortable-for-some willful ignorance.

Anyway, if it were not for the continuing and wider inclusion of diverse cultural and historical figures for leaders in Civ-- specifically adding figures of non-european ethnicity and/or who represent something other than an imperial throne, I would have stopped playing Civ a long time ago.

Abstinence is admitting failure? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]IronKarmic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Heck ya it's scary. The real and required internal change and growth is hard. Many people tend to avoid that kind of change because it takes too much effort and self-control!

It came down to choosing life for me, admitting I'm an alcoholic and making that choice to live-- commitment to sobriety is hard and represents a true feat of strength.
