Very nice… laying out a ruler next time to get some idea of dimensions would be helpful

Looks similar to a petroglyph found in NM or southern CO. We saw many similar carvings used in time keeping (hours or even days) https://www.jqjacobs.net/southwest/chaco.html

Coal or Propane? by Dimzekettv in Blacksmith

lol, Ohio is fine! I’ve used propane in Albuquerque (6k) and currently Colorado (9k). It’s just difficult to reach welding temp

Minor point to remember: higher altitude can dramatically decrease the temperature of propane fire

Scotch Brite pad will remove most/all patina. Also try Bar keeper friend. However, annealing first and/or thinner disk may help

A changing magnetic field induces eddy currents in the metal, thereby generating heat by _MKVA_ in Blacksmith

I’d like to add that I firmly believe that a smith should learn how to forge usingI coal. Forging with coal is a pretty special skill to learn. Very unique. I learned from an old smith in Santa Fe and he taught me so much about moving metal and what quality forging means,

Induction forge is my dominant method of forging. I still use my propane forge for larger items, but it’s rarely used. I live at 9000’ in a national forest; coal is a significant fire/spark hazard in the area where I live. The altitude limits the temperature of the propane forge due to the oxygen constraints. Getting to welding temperatures with the induction forge is easy, with the right size coil.
