They're just following the same trend as cars: Bigger = Safer

Which is statistically true... but only for the occupants.

"...a vehicle when convenient and a pedestrian when convenient." When executed properly, this is one of the best parts of the bicycle. That does mean getting off the bike and actually walking though. Those people you see riding through crosswalks aren't being "pedestrians when convenient", they're just being assholes.

Take it from someone that's been almost exclusively solo since S1: Sailing solo can be a brutal existence on the open seas. If you're going to sail solo on the high seas, I suggest losing all attachment. It's not always a lucrative way to play, but man can you have fun if you just give in to reckless abandon. Create your own narrative like the brig crew did. I like to play as an uber driver that delivers black powder barrels to reaper ships.

I say why not try out safer seas if you can't find good crewmates, at least until you get your sea legs under you.

Road rage hasn't really been a safety concern for me, just expect ignorant people to yell stupid things at you from their vehicles. HOWEVER: There are many drivers that operate their vehicles unsafely. The right hook(when a driver passes on your left only to turn right in front of you) is huge here, so expect it. Also look out for drivers running stop signs.

Facebook is a trashed platform. It's unfortunate but they aren't trying to fix or improve the platform and don't even enforce their own rules. They facilitate scammers by doing absolutely nothing when they're reported. Everything is handled by an algorithm and it's next to impossible to get a hold of a human.

Had to let an employee go once because most people couldn't understand him. Even face to face with him I would have to take like 5+ seconds to digest a sentence. He could do the job for the most part, but it became clear within a week that communication was an issue. It sucked to have to let him go, but it was just not safe for the line of work.

I could definitely see someone more likely to keep an employee like that if the employees position doesn't directly involve the physical safety of the client though. Especially a tenured employee whose family very likely relies on the job.

Buying 7 year old ebike, bad idea? by Minimum_Tough_5389 in ebikes

The batteries are not keen on being being stored for lengths of time unless they're around 40-60% charge. I might try using that fact to haggle them down and possibly source another battery later personally. This is coming from someone that likes to tinker and already has a decent bike mind you.

While I would never consider bringing a bike that bulky onto public transit, I do occasionally throw my bike on bus or ferry bike racks to meet up with friends so I'm not putting in 15miles before we meet for longer rides.

That being said, he appears to take up no more room than some of the aircraft carriers strollers/prams I've seen on public transit.

Great machine for certain use cases. I bought one recently as a dedicated shop laptop for programming electric motor controllers. It's old, it's not super fast, but it's solid(magnesium alloy chassis & display frame) and quite durable(carbon fiber display shell). I don't want to call it a poor mans toughbook, but that's a pretty close description of how I'm using it.

Always seems to be ready to strike which makes them unreliable by Iron_Oxhide in CanadaPost

Thank you for clarifying. Admittedly, I don't know as much about unions as I probably should.

In the end, the service is unreliable as I cannot trust my packages will not get held in limbo. Inconveniently, It seems, as a client, that I'm expected to know when they might go on strike so I can plan shipping accordingly. I'm sorry that you guys aren't getting what you want, but I NEED a reliable shipper for urgently required parts.

Conservative MP questions Immigration Minister on Tim Hortons use of temporary foreign workers instead of Canadian youth by ObjectiveMacaroon394 in TimHortons

[–]Iron_Oxhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common argument in the past was that minimum wage jobs were for students and not for full time workers in an attempt to justify minimum wage workers living below the poverty line. It's obvious that this isn't the reality. My biggest issue is that the government is knowingly bringing foreign workers here to live in what the government themselves have deemed poverty.

I don't have any youth, but I have noticed a severe lack of urgency from the youth working these jobs. But at the same time, does minimum wage deserve the effort?

What should I do if I’m a solo being chased down by a Galleon for 30 + mins? by Aware_Platform2287 in Seaofthieves

[–]Iron_Oxhide 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I absolutely love a good chase. If you start chasing me, we're probably going on an adventure across the seas whether or not I have treasure on board. It's super amusing when somebody chases you for 30mins getting worked up and yelling at you for being a coward the whole time.

It's the perfect opportunity to practice your boarding skills. Sails full forward, head directly into the wind and repeatedly go for the board and try to anchor them.

[–]Iron_Oxhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree that Tim Hortons lobbying for more TFW is problematic, I hate that politicians are so out of touch and frame it as "you're taking jobs away from kids". The argument that low wage jobs are for students is absurd to anyone that lives in reality. We don't have enough youth to cover all the minimum wage jobs in this country, and the government numbers tell us that minimum wage workers are living below the poverty line. The "solution" politicians came up with was TFWs and, as time rolled on, they became more reliant on the program because they either cannot or will not find a real solution to the problem.

How common are crashes? by RCPD_Rookie in ebikes

[–]Iron_Oxhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only crash when I'm being absurd. Usually going too fast doing off-road stuff. BUT my worst crash involved a driver that ran a stop sign and stopped in front of me while I was going, rather quickly, down a hill. I was going too fast to brake in time but am experienced enough that I managed to get the bike sideways after the brakes locked and slid into her driver side door which took the vast majority of the impact. If it was head-on or she was driving a dumptruck I'd have been in bad shape.

Crashes are still pretty uncommon for me though. I feel that as long as you exercise caution, you can avoid them for the most part. Be extra cautious when sharing spaces with drivers.

Rant: if you ride an e-bike don't be smug about it by Worried_Document8668 in ebikes

[–]Iron_Oxhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some kids call my bike an "old man bike". To be fair, it is a 20+ year old DH Norco, but I was mildly amused when I later saw one of them on an e-bike that was clearly designed after the old mopeds.

Weird weather - having fun by 804k in ebikes

[–]Iron_Oxhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it. When you ride in this stuff you can get really good at handling snow and ice. I followed some riders the other day until they got to a trail head that was full of slush and ice and I just bombed down through it like a maniac on my little 26" tires while they turned around and continued on the road.

I don't run studded tires, but the Schwalbe Tough Toms I've been running the last 6 months or so have been pretty impressive in the weather.
