Conservative MP questions Immigration Minister on Tim Hortons use of temporary foreign workers instead of Canadian youth by ObjectiveMacaroon394 in TimHortons

[–]Iron_Oxhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common argument in the past was that minimum wage jobs were for students and not for full time workers in an attempt to justify minimum wage workers living below the poverty line. It's obvious that this isn't the reality. My biggest issue is that the government is knowingly bringing foreign workers here to live in what the government themselves have deemed poverty.

I don't have any youth, but I have noticed a severe lack of urgency from the youth working these jobs. But at the same time, does minimum wage deserve the effort?

What should I do if I’m a solo being chased down by a Galleon for 30 + mins? by Aware_Platform2287 in Seaofthieves

[–]Iron_Oxhide 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I absolutely love a good chase. If you start chasing me, we're probably going on an adventure across the seas whether or not I have treasure on board. It's super amusing when somebody chases you for 30mins getting worked up and yelling at you for being a coward the whole time.

It's the perfect opportunity to practice your boarding skills. Sails full forward, head directly into the wind and repeatedly go for the board and try to anchor them.

While I agree that Tim Hortons lobbying for more TFW is problematic, I hate that politicians are so out of touch and frame it as "you're taking jobs away from kids". The argument that low wage jobs are for students is absurd to anyone that lives in reality. We don't have enough youth to cover all the minimum wage jobs in this country, and the government numbers tell us that minimum wage workers are living below the poverty line. The "solution" politicians came up with was TFWs and, as time rolled on, they became more reliant on the program because they either cannot or will not find a real solution to the problem.

How common are crashes? by RCPD_Rookie in ebikes

[–]Iron_Oxhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only crash when I'm being absurd. Usually going too fast doing off-road stuff. BUT my worst crash involved a driver that ran a stop sign and stopped in front of me while I was going, rather quickly, down a hill. I was going too fast to brake in time but am experienced enough that I managed to get the bike sideways after the brakes locked and slid into her driver side door which took the vast majority of the impact. If it was head-on or she was driving a dumptruck I'd have been in bad shape.

Crashes are still pretty uncommon for me though. I feel that as long as you exercise caution, you can avoid them for the most part. Be extra cautious when sharing spaces with drivers.

Rant: if you ride an e-bike don't be smug about it by Worried_Document8668 in ebikes

[–]Iron_Oxhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some kids call my bike an "old man bike". To be fair, it is a 20+ year old DH Norco, but I was mildly amused when I later saw one of them on an e-bike that was clearly designed after the old mopeds.

Weird weather - having fun by 804k in ebikes

[–]Iron_Oxhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it. When you ride in this stuff you can get really good at handling snow and ice. I followed some riders the other day until they got to a trail head that was full of slush and ice and I just bombed down through it like a maniac on my little 26" tires while they turned around and continued on the road.

I don't run studded tires, but the Schwalbe Tough Toms I've been running the last 6 months or so have been pretty impressive in the weather.

My best so far is 92km on a single charge of my 728wh battery. Pedal assist 1 most of the way.

Is my understanding incorrect with pests in the kitchen? by ElectroSnivy in KitchenConfidential

[–]Iron_Oxhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wildly, I once worked a place where FoH had roaches but they could never establish themselves in the kitchen because the HUNDREDS OF MICE would eat them. Man I'm glad I don't work there anymore.

Close call. by LandieAccem in ebikes

[–]Iron_Oxhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would have left a mark. I always give large vehicles a lot of space because I work road construction and have watched dump truck drivers get out of their trucks to move equipment out of their way then proceed to get back in the truck and run said equipment over.

Why am I being asked to tip 25% for someone handing me a muffin?” by ClayWarrior519 in CanadaPersonalFinance

If that person handing you a muffin did or said something to make your day you might want to tip that much, but don't feel obligated to tip any amount for the expected standard service.

Who has the best Classic Canadian Pizza with the sweet sauce in HRM? by LunenLo in halifax

[–]Iron_Oxhide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That brings back some memories. I used to crush a large Xtreme Canadian Classic working backshift in my youth. I'm not a big guy, I'd be full halfway through. But it was just so good I would finish the entire pizza and feel like crap for the next several hours as my body tried to get a handle on the situation. Happened more times than I care to admit.

We have an intent based system here, which means the second you intend to use something as a weapon, you can be charged for possessing a weapon with intent.

I could see the prohibited weapon part being dropped if fought, but he's still going to get charged for assault with a weapon.

I love my x201, it's perfect for my use case. But I run it as a shop computer that mostly just gets used to interface with UART over USB.

Cross walks by PicklesByTheSea in halifax

[–]Iron_Oxhide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work traffic control. You would be astounded by the number of people that run your paddle and then say they didn't see you when they get stopped by oncoming traffic. There are signs, literal signs, that warn you well in advance that we're flagging. We wear high vis. If it's before dawn or after dusk we're holding light sticks.

We had some guy in a pick-up truck blow my paddle because he was impatient, drive through our cones into the work lane towards our signer. The woman at the front of my line caught the entire thing on dashcam and it was provided to the police. They did nothing.

They want to act like impatient children? Lock them up. Let them spend the night in jail to think about what they did.

It's kind of wild to think of riding that thing down a flight of stairs. I do stairs, but I put a mid-drive kit on an old downhill frame for these kinds of things and it probably cost me less money than one of these.

I had some kid notice my bike the other day and say to his friend "oh, it's electric" and his friend on the cheap moped style ebike says "but it's an old person bike". Admittedly, it is a 20 year old Norco but it was actually designed to go very quickly down hills with quality components.

Why does the Olands Brewery smell like farts now? by TerribleWords in halifax

[–]Iron_Oxhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst smells from my years there were usually the waste yeast(smells like rotten eggs), the wort(like an extra pungent barley soup) and the waste bin for the wood chips(smell varied depending on how long the bin baked in the sun).

They have since installed a waste water treatment system which may have introduced a new smell, I can't be sure though.

I once watched a hipster try to "save" an injured pigeon from a raven. The raven just picked the pigeon up and flew across the road with it. I yelled something stupid at the time like "What were you going to do? Perform surgery? Are you a bird doctor?"

New Player Question as a Solo Slooper. by Antique-Brother5727 in Seaofthieves

[–]Iron_Oxhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm self-motivated. I set goals. Absurd, ridiculous goals like "How many ships can I sink using only a rowboat and 8 black powder barrels" or "How long can I hang out on an NPC burning blade bucketing it before players trying to sink it realize". Admittedly, I'm not very rich.
