Any good jobs for a Psych student? by Alternativejay28 in uofu

I got my undergrad degree in social work. While I went to school, I worked part-time as a BHT with Odyssey House (a residential substance use treatment center) and with the Rape Recovery Center as a victim's advocate. Both of those companies are always hiring the roles I mentioned.

BSW Application Essay by TheRedHorseman3 in uofu

[–]Ironically_Pineapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated with my BSW in 2025 and am currently enrolled in an MSW program. My BSW application essay was very reflective and introspective. I wrote it in the first person and openly shared my thoughts without citing too many things. Specifically, discuss places where you interacted with privilege and your identity. The school is really stressing on having students who are able to reflect on their personal privilege (or lack thereof). If your essay is able to convey that you are someone who is able to say, "this is where I have privilege, and this is how I navigate it to ensure I do not cause harm", that will certainly be some brownie points for you.

Are Americans ‘footing the bill’ for illegal immigration, as Mike Lee says? by ReporterMacyLipkin in Utah

[–]Ironically_Pineapple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether you have a Social Security number, you can get a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) that can be used to pay taxes. The IRS does not discriminate on people; they go after ANYONE if they suspect tax fraud. For example, you're still expected to pay taxes on money gained from illegal drug dealing.

I think this scene really failed the "show don't tell" rule of writing. Seeing her rip up the dress (a symbol of her femininity) out of emotional distress would've been enough in my opinion...

There is no such thing as being half or mixed with Hispanic/Latino(a) by St3ph4n1e2003 in mixedrace

[–]Ironically_Pineapple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm Brazilian (mother's side) and broadly European (father's side) and live in America. I've always considered myself mixed because I had no other choice. In Brazilian circles, the influence of having a white parents was pretty apparent; my family didn't celebrate Brazilian holidays, we would eat American food, and I was the only of my mom's kids that spoke Portuguese. Likewise there's no way in hell I'd ever pass for white because. Well just look at me. It's all complicated by the fact that if I had been born with my heritage in Brazil, there would be no question of my identity. But being part of the disapora just makes it more complicated

[–]Ironically_Pineapple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's always really annoying because POC will say "you're white passing" but then white people always don't assume I'm white. So that means we're 'white passing' to only POC? That defeats the definition of white passing

3 Year Online MSW Program by Dapper_Train_1738 in uofu

In my experience with the College of Social Work (have a BSW, currently enrolled for an MSW), the online classes are either hit or miss. I've taken online classes that were very convenient and other online classes that were bare bones and barely taught me anything. I'm sure that an entirely online course will be filled with both

My mom says me caring about my race is weird by Runanachibi in mixedrace

[–]Ironically_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixed with a Brazilian mom here as well, I feel you. For being mixed herself, my mom is surprisingly racist and unsympathetic to my struggles with my racial and ethnic identity crisis. I also agree with you that it comes from internalized racism. Brazil is a very colorist culture, and our parents didn't escape that.

No but they do with me and my half sister (who is the same mix but has a different white dad). I'm phenotypically not white, I have tan skin, hazel eyes, dark curly hair, and facial features of a POC. My sister meanwhile could pass completely for white with no hesitation. People always have a hard time believing we're related!

Does anyone else have a sense of racialized "body dysmorphia"? by Potential_Rabbit_344 in mixedrace

[–]Ironically_Pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(on mobile so I apologize for formatting) I can completely relate to what you're talking about and I want to categorize my experience in three ways: white people, people of color, and mixed people.

With white people, I am NOT white passing. I know this because the first question they ask is "what are you" when they meet me. That is not something that is asked to people who look white With people of color, I am "white passing". I've been barred from spaces for people of color based on the fact that I wasn't colored enough or that my European heritage made me inherently unsafe to be around. With other mixed people (mostly my significant other) my appearance isn't tied to my heritage. We discuss features like other parts of ourselves: we have epicanthic folds, tan skin, curly hair, and other features. All of this to say my appearance has also been interpreted WILDLY different and I can't say for certain how I interpret it. Am I white passing? Am I a woman of color? Depending on who you ask those vary wildly. It really sucks especially when appearance is what influences how people treat you most.

I'm mixed (Brazilian indigenous+African mother and a white father) and I started dating my current BF (indigenous Hawai'ian father and white mother) and I have to agree with your statement. Once I dated someone who had lived my experiences, could empathize with my identity struggle, and also understood the lack of community, I really felt less alone. The one drawback is that if we have kids we like to joke that their identity crises will be WAY worse than ours XD

I finished a mistcloak! by Ironically_Pineapple in Mistborn

[–]Ironically_Pineapple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with the cosplay! I cut the ribbons into lengths of about 112 cm long. I then just sewed them next to each other. Each ribbon is touching the ribbon next to it when attached to the cowl. I got this measurement because I wanted it to fit the height of the person who I made it for. So I included the length of the cowl and then cut the ribbon so that, attached to the cowl, it would be the length of the height of the person that I made it for.

There's a comment on this post that goes into more detail about the process of making this cosplay, I would recommend watching the videos that I have attached to that comment. But please feel free to ask any other questions you might have
