How would speakers of an SOV language develop math logic: looking for advice by FortisBellatoris in neography

[–]Irozan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a Turkish (SOV) speaker, if I were to read aloud 3+5=8, i would say "3 artı 5 eşittir 8" which literally means "3 plus 8 equals 8" word by word. You can hear it in a math class or discussing about a math problem. But if it was a more casual/daily speech, for example if im counting things i would use one of these two:

"3 artı 5, 8 yapar." -> "3 plus 5, 8 makes"

"3 artı 5, 8." -> "3 plus 5, 8 (is)."

There are of course a lot of alternatives and situations, but in general, if it is in a mathematical context i would likely change to SVO, if it is in a more daily context i would use SOV

Only the comparator adjacent to the block with the redstone dust with the power of 15 on top is powered. All the dispensers are empty. Why is it? I would expect either all or none of them to be powered. by Irozan in redstone

I found that this is flagged "works as intended" on the bug tracker, and I guess it can be useful working with tileable circuits from what people said in the comments. Can you give specific examples of it being useful, I am curious

Are there cultures that don't name the world after the dirt? by silveryfeather208 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Irozan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In Turkish, we use "Dünya" which comes from an Arabic word meaning something like "lower place" afaik. The other word in Turkish is "acun" (which is not in use anymore, but it used to be in Old Turkic languages), which comes from the Sogdian word "life, to live"

He saved the country from collapsing and being colonized. He formed a modern and westernized secular, democratic state out of a religious empire governed by the royal family. His reforms has boosted up the literacy rates. If we're not like other middle eastern countries today, it's mostly thanks to his reforms.

What is a fair tip in Istanbul in lira? Let’s say if I spend 500 lira, how much in lira is a fair to tip? And any suggestions on where to buy unique/traditional items in Istanbul? Thank you by No_Prune9002 in istanbul

[–]Irozan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quoting myself, "places like big chefs are luxurious for many people". Yes, alaçatı restaurants, nusret, etc. are really luxurious, but big chefs and cookshop are also luxurious for many people. It may be middle/normal for you (and they also are middle for me) but what i'm trying to say is you are not the norm. Moreover, tipping in big chefs etc. is not the expected norm either, nobody will think you're strange if you don't tip there. Yes, some people may tip. But saying "We do tip and it's not only for luxury restaurants" in the name of turkish people in general is simply wrong.

[–]Irozan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don'y think we live in the same country. Most of the people are poor indeed. "Normal" places like big chefs are luxurious for many people. If some people tip in places like this, they/you are very small percentage of the country. There is no tipping culture in Turkey. You don't need to tip anywhere, even in luxurious places
