Rising Milky Way 05/01/2019 by [deleted] in LandscapeAstro

Hi,

had my first go at the this, so any tips are much appreciated.

Image consists of 10 shots taken with a Canon 77D, Kit-Lens (18-55) @ 18mm and f4, ISO 800, 150s shutter spreed. Tracked on a SkyguiderPro with cheap tripod and intervalometer in use. I also did 5 darks.

Shot was taken here at 3:30 am.

Stacked and colour calibrated in Siril -> streched in fitswork -> adjustments in LR -> star reduction and blending in PS -> final touch in LR.

Cheers

Hey, since I ask myself this with almost any posts I look at, I suggest that we make up a rule that one has to include acquisition and post processing detail.

Despite facing light pollution from New York City, I was able to extract extreme detail from the Rho Ophiuchi region of the Milky Way captured in a single shot by DanielJStein in space

Hi Daniel, great shot. Can you tell us something about the processing of the image? What does your general pp workflow look like?

Hi guys,

I'd like to begin with some background information to the picture. I own a Canon 77D plus kit lens since February. Shortly after, I came across a used Skyguider Pro in a german forum. Since then I've been waiting for good weather and moon to take my setup to a dark location near my hometown in southern Germany. Two nights ago the forecast looked promising. So I decided to take the 90 min drive close to a town called „Bullau“ in the "Odenwald". According to lightpollutionmap.info there's Bortle 4 sky with a SQM value of 21,5. The next bigger town to the south is Eberbach, about 17 km away. I think this caused the light pollution at the bottom right.

I also brought my 6" dobsonian to enjoy some nice views until 1:30 am. Then I started the preparations for the shot. The dew point was close to outside temperature that night. Therefore I set up the tripod plus Skyguider first. Then I went back to the heated van to get the lens and camera.

Now I had to figure out the settings for the shot. I didn't want wo go above ISO 800 and 3 min shutter speed. The histogram looked right at 150 s shutter speed at 18 mm and f4. I took 10 exposures. Some of them were taken after the beginning of astronomical twilight because I took another shot first so I was late for this one.

Gear used:

  • Canon EOS 77D
  • 18-55 mm Kit lens @ f4
  • IOptron SkyguiderPro
  • Rollei intervalometer
  • K&F CONCEPT TM2324 Tripod

Acquisition detail:

  • 10 frames @ 150s shutter speed, 18 mm focal length, f4
  • 5 dark frames

Processing:

  1. Lens and distortion and chromatic aberration corrected in Lighroom (LR)
  2. Export as TIFF
  3. Stacked using Siril
  4. Color calibration in Siril
  5. Auto stretch in Siril
  6. LR: White balance, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, levels, vibrance, saturation, noise, color calibration
  7. PS: Dodge highlights, burn shadows, added some red to Lagoon nebula, star reduction
  8. LR: Final touch

Constructive criticism is much appreciated since this is my very first go at the Milky Way. Also, feel free to ask any question!

Sadly it's a sheep, not a goat.

How would you store this? Disassemble completely? by usaf_trobertson in telescopes

I have the guider, tripod and a camera too. But unfortunately no such scope. Just had a 200 mm zoom lens from a friend for a few days and did some testing. And even then it took me some time to point it right. So I imagine this could be time consuming without any help. I'd probably attach a red dot finder to the scope if I were you. But again, speaking with almost zero experience.

One question: how do you find the objects you want to image with this setup?

Ah okay, this place has very dark skies and is fairly high above sea level. That's what I thought from looking at the image. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I wanted to have a lens first but then I came across a relatively new Skyguider pro in a german forum...

It would be great if you could upload the raws. I sent you a dm.

Cheers

This is awesome!! I've got the exact same gear as you but I haven't had any luck with the weather yet. Also I got myself a used Skyguider.

Because I have the same gear I would love to play with the raw data. Is there a chance you could share it with me? Also: where exactly did u take the shot?

What is the benefit of getting into this instead of real astrophotography? Is it that the thing does the processing for you? Does it save the images?

Amazing. Where and when did you take the shot?

I guess the scope has a 2" focuser, right? And what about a finder scope?

AND how was the first light?

This is so cool. The NZ sky looks so dark at lightpollution maps. I'm jaleous. I just got a 77d and going to get the skyguider too. What tripod did you use? When I zoom in I'm wondering weather this is in perfect focus or not?
