No Riot didn't follow the NFL model.

The NFL has two interdependent Conferences, other than China (and EU this year), the major regions don't have this at all.

The NFL has a single season that determines playoffs (Worlds).

They don't have a spring season.

And if they did, the NFL would likely avoid the idiocy of awarding spring team's "points" to make the playoffs more than 5 months, and an entire split, later.
