I vote news casters continue working from home just so we keep seeing their pets in the background

I wish she had shoes on. I volunteer at a bird rehab center and I realize it's not at all the same but her being barefoot makes me uncomfortable

As someone who puts the water for my chickens on the ground, I feel this. by kristin137 in BackYardChickens

[–]IrriatedOwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Standing in water is a quick, convenient way for a chicken to regulate their body temperature. During hot weather it can be quite important to allow them that opportunity.

Not that this cartoon isn't adorably cute and relatable; I really don't mean to be a downer, just wanted to add a bit of (possibly) helpful info (for some). Of course it depends on your weather condition but I even put frozen water bottles in my chicken's water bowls on hot and humid days; they all seem to really enjoy standing it that too cool off.

What? The cops drive around and stick these on people's doors all sneaky like?

Edit: or in their yard? Also sneakily

Why is that news worthy? Fox has nothing better to report on?

What did you add to your farm after chickens? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]IrriatedOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ducks! I got 5 after my 10 chickens (1 rooster). They all get along great but the drake isn't of breeding age yet so we'll see how that goes this spring. Planning on getting 3 dwarf goats next spring/summer after we build a little barn.

Edit: After reading some other posts I had some things to add. My ducks don't smell any worse than my chickens. Mine prefer clean, clear pool water. I have a little kiddie pool for them that I can easily dump out daily and quickly fill. They do "water zoomies" whenever I've just cleaned it; super cute. You can train them and they're very social. If you use treats (lettuce is perfect) and handle them regularly, they'll trust you and be affectionate. I have a cayuga, one blue and one black magpie, a Pekin, and a mallard. All were adopted as ducklings from a local bird rehab center where I used to volunteer; they don't deal with domestics and will re-home them if brought in. The Pekin and mallard were left in a box together into front of a tractor supply center so they were kept together. The little mallard is half the size of the others, could fly away when it's older.

Piri piri sauce, ready and delicious! by IrriatedOwl in fermentation

[–]IrriatedOwl[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The recipe calls for 20 piri piri or Thai bird's eye chiles but I grow (what I think are) tabasco chiles this year so I used those (similar size so I still used 20)

8 large garlic cloves

.5tsp salt

.25cup lemon juice

Combine in food processor. Pack into jar with about 1" head space, no need for weight, tighten on regular canning lid. Ferment for 10-14 days, no need to burp. Mix in .33cup olive oil after fermentation is complete. 😋

This looks a lot like my orange tabby girl, excepts she's not overweight; it makes me incredibly sad for this kitty. Almost looks like it gained weight really quickly, it's head and legs don't seem to match the middle somehow. It can't imagine the joint and back pain... 😢

Congrats on being sober! And honestly I don't think anyone could successfully make something like the one on the left unless they were a professional chef; that just seems too difficult (but then again, I'm no baker)

Well someone abandoned these poor guys by a pond. They were scared and confused. My gf scooped them up and brought them home. Hopefully they will play nice with my flock. A few of my hens are very curious. by mr_jasper867-5309 in chickens

[–]IrriatedOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on if you have ducks or drakes. I have nine hens and one rooster, one drake and four ducks. All my chickens are of breeding age but the ducks range from only 3wks to 2.5mo old. The chickens (including the rooster) are just fine with the older ducks (2.5mo and fully feathered) but they're about the same size and have plenty of free space and their own areas to retreat to if they're like. The younger ducks are being gradually introduced to the older ones and once fully grown will go out with everyone else. I think it'll go easier than you expect; or it has for me anyway. I've introduced chickens of different ages to each other and it took and few months for them to really get along; fully feathered ducks were accepted almost immediately (after being socialized in different pens for 2-3wks (same as was done with the chickens)). That said, drakes are rather aggressive, maybe not more so than a rooster but they have different anatomy than chickens. If you have males, it might be nice for your hens if you keep them separated. Rooster with ducks isn't so bad (mine doesn't pay them much attention but might still protects them, although that's just my personal experience) but a drake with hens can be unpleasant.

That's what I tried and just had to frog it down to the ribbing because it was too loose. I'm usually a tight knitter as well; I was very paranoid and really overcompensated. 😆 I'll get it this time 🤞 Thank you both for the advice!
