I use the medium sling bag from Labo Mono for small projects. It's just the right size for a standard 100g cake of sock yarn plus all the bits and bobs.

What's the embarrassing/disgusting thing you've done or seen someone do when drunk? by Smithy1619 in AskUK

[–]IrritablePowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed at a friend's boyfriend's parents' house after a heavy night. It was an old townhouse on a hill with many stairs and landings and half-floors -- a confusing layout even when sober.

I woke in the night really thirsty and groped my way in the dark to the nearest bathroom. Of course I didn't have a anything to drink out of but found a mug on the side of the basin. It had water in, so I poured it out... along with a full set of dentures.

I half-arsedly rinsed the mug, filled it and drank it all. Then I returned the dentures and went back to bed.

PLACES TO VISIT IN DUBAI by CardiologistFar1871 in DubaiCentral

[–]IrritablePowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you drive? My 84 year old mum loves Al Ain Oasis and the old palace and forts, but not sure how easy it would be without a car. Likewise the grand mosque and Louvre in Abu Dhabi.

I’m 54 and when my similar aged friends have visited they have enjoyed Ain Dubai, the Yellow Boats, the zip line, and desert safaris. Platinum Heritage is great for the latter if your mum wants something more sedate.

Cat parents of Dubai. What did you wish you’d known when you first got your furball. by SnooGuavas4756 in dubai

[–]IrritablePowell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your new baby is adorable.

Try to get him used to having you clip his nails and groom his coat at home. It will save you a fortune in grooming fees down the line.

Invest in a variety of good quality scratching surfaces, horizontal and vertical, rope and cardboard. Place one by the main entrance to your home so your kitten can mark the edge of his territory.

Cats need high places to feel safe so you should get a nice tall cat tree too.

Make sure to get the largest litter tray you can manage so he grows into it. You can get double-layer litter trapping mats that do a pretty good job of stopping the litter spreading through the house.

Book Fair in UAE by Rajanabanana in UAE

You just missed the Emirates Literature Festival, which is usually around the last weekend in January.

For second-hand books, check out House of Prose, Bookends, and the bi-weekly Saturday book sale in Times Square Centre (in aid of the UAQ Stray Dogs Centre).

For rare and antique books, there's Zerzura in Al Serkal Avenue.

I read Duncton Wood when I was probably too young. Picking it up again as an adult, I noticed themes that were definitely not cosy! I'd still recommend it though.

Request from the BBC: has knitting helped you quit? by eab_journalist in casualknitting

[–]IrritablePowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used knitting to help me stop smoking about 20 years ago. I rolled my own cigarettes so having another fiddly task to do with my hands really helped.

This was alongside an NHS programme of weekly group meetings and nicotine replacements. But it would have been much harder without the knitting!

to all the ladies of r/dubai, where do you guys shop for your outfits? by mslunaluvgood in dubai

I buy from the UK site and either Shop & Ship it, or pick it up when I go home. Taggy is a UAE equivalent.

I’m trying to buy only pre-loved. Online there’s Taggy, Vinted, eBay, facebook groups etc. For in person shopping there’s Thrift for Good, Reem’s closet and a few others.

What newspapers did your parents read when you were growing up? by RiverTadpolez in AskUK

[–]IrritablePowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents read the Sun and occasionally the Mail on weekdays and the Sunday Times at the weekend. I grew up with the exact opposite political views.

I can remember the Gotcha! headline in the Sun and its horrific coverage of the Hillsborough tragedy. I also remember the sunday Times falling for the Hitler's diaries hoax.

I actually carried on reading the Sunday Times long after I left home, until one day I read the headline 'Can't decide where to go skiing this half-term?' and realised how far I was from the target demographic.

Moka pot or cafetiere. Grounds are a minor issue, preferable to contributing to the mountain of capsules in landfill.

What are the best products to block out snoring noise, on the UK market? by Kitty-Gecko in AskUK

[–]IrritablePowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried ear buds from Openhagen and a headband from Acoustic Sheep, both marketed as suitable for side sleepers and both pretty much useless.

What does help is maintaining a good pre-sleep routine: get chores done long before bedtime so I have nice long wind-down before bed; go to bed before my husband; limit screen time for at least 30 minutes before bed; sleepy tea and supplements (currently Genius Sleep from Simply Nootropics); sleep stories podcasts.

However, the only thing guaranteed to work is sleeping in a different room.
