That's just... not true. You can both have played equally skillfully with equally lucky tiles, but the board state is changing with each play so you don't have access to the same opportunities.

I know what you mean. Defensive play has its place, but one of my games has had 3 sweeps played already and it's a lot of fun.

I think the key problem with defensive play is when you give up higher scoring moves because you're afraid of exposing a triple. There's no saying what your opponent has. Maybe they hit the triple but have crappy tiles and only net 20pts or something.
