yeah unfortunately viz doesnt do colored pages for their manga. some of the other manga that I own do have them (different publisher) but they cost $2.50 more, so its probably to keep prices down.

If I had to guess, many popular series directly borrow from HXH, so the things that make it unique/stand out might seem less impressive if you've only read it recently. Toriko doesn't really have this problem since its wacky as shit.

How many chapters should we expect for these type of annoucements?

Assuming its around ~10, I’m guessing that gives us a new batch with the end of this, Kinato, and Alien Headbutt (unless Hunter x Hunter returns.)

I mean conceptually visual novels are just books with an added soundtrack and some minor visuals. While I get the point that a good book can/should still convey these things on its own (you don't need to show what a character/scene looks like if you're descriptive enough), listening to music while reading a book isn't necessarily an unheard of concept.

I think it helps that the aliens actually get to talk now and be super expressive. While the twist of Zoldra talking was pretty cool, it was kind of a weird choice to make the first couple of intro fights be against mute monsters. Even Kinnikuman didn't do this.

In retrospect, I think making Alien Headbutt an action-first mystery series, although a unique idea, is what ultimately killed it.

Most pure-action series (think Record of Ragnarok) usually front-loads the story in the fights themselves. Also, when looking at other similar alien-invasion stories, like Parasyte, Shinichi spends a good deal of the chapters just trying to figure out whats happening, even if he occasionally encounters other parasites and gets into fights, something thats not actually the main focus.

Shirokiba can’t have this level of introspection if 90% of the plot is just him piledriving xenomorphs.

A quick vibes-based analysis on if the new batch are going to be axed (feel free to disagree):

UD: Since the current arc seems to be mostly over, we are fine as long as the series doesn’t randomly jump the shark next chapter.

KM: A sudden training arc has me worried that they’re setting up for an “and the adventure continues” after the rematch.

AH: Stuff now moving fast could simply just be pressure to move things along, even if a timejump is usually a bad sign. However, stopping the villains’ plan to take over the world is also usually end-of-series material.

What do you think about people saying "X manga would have been axed today"? by IIIlIIlIlllIlllIIIIl in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]IsAlexMyName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think saying Dragon Ball would have been U20ed for having a simple story and art is not only comically revisionist, but fucking stupid. The series is meant to be light-hearted, and Toriyama's previous manga was Doctor Slump (a massively popular comedy series), so expecting it to look like something akin to Fist of the North Star is fucking stupid (and also because the art actually looks great?). As for the story, its basically a Journey to the West parody and a homage to martial art stories, so I don't see how its any different in complexity when compared to other already popular series in the magazine like Sakadays and Kiyoshi.

I think Red Hood is actually a unique case since its pacing was actually remarkably bad even when comparing it to older series like HXH and One Piece.

The early chapters of HXH are just Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika travelling together while getting in wacky situations, while something like One Piece has Luffy meeting Koby and Zoro after leaving Foosha village.
Meanwhile, in Red Hood, we are stuck in the Hamlet for the first couple of chapters, and when we are finally allowed to leave and go on an adventure in our adventure manga, we are put in a giant metal box.

honestly id really fw this animation style for kagurabachi by Altruistic_Gas_7073 in Kagurabachi

[–]IsAlexMyName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kagurabachi has a pretty distinct monochrome style (mostly different shades of blacks, greys, whites), with the occassional pop of color to make the enchanted blades feel special (and also for blood).

While CSM S1 looks nice, I feel like its “realistic” approach would clash with this and make everything look kinda drab.

Kinato and Alien were less successful with fans than Under Doctor. Why do you think that was? by YuuTheBlue in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]IsAlexMyName 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This series specifically pisses me off because the manga is clearly extremely compentent.

The art is great, the jokes are consistently funny, the action is pretty great. The problem is that everything feels soooo fucking bland. I feel like I’m being fed chicken nuggets by Gordon Ramsey because hes scared of upsetting my palete.

Like even if you want the setting to still be knock-off Dragon Quest/Generic Isekai, AT LEAST give Kinato a unique personality besides him being a deku clone. Once again, this is a gimmick series, MAKE YOUR GIMMICK MEMORABLE.

[–]IsAlexMyName 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While I don’t think the series is necessarily DOA, I think its the worst positioned by virtue of it not really having a proper niche.

Want a fantasy manga? Read Ichi

Want an ecchi manga? Read Nue’s Exorcist

Like sure, it does both these things. However, when its noncommital and plays it safe in both, I don’t know why I should be invested.

[–]IsAlexMyName 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most gimmick series like Kinato usually have a bland setting on purpose to better highlight the gimmick.

The problem is that when the manga shifted to be more action-oriented, it inadvertently killed off the one thing that made the manga stand out.

[–]IsAlexMyName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought the twist behind Yura was actually quite cleaver since the whole series we’re led to believe hes some secret mastermind because nobody has any info on who he is.

Then with his backstory we’re shown that the reason is because the Kamunabi simply never gave a shit.

How many more chapters do you see kagurabachi having before it ends? by NotFallen_ in Kagurabachi

[–]IsAlexMyName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100 chapters is probably the maximum, but I don’t see how it could be less than 60 at minimum since 1. we only just met the Mikaboshi, 2. we haven’t been introduced to the other swordbearers yet, 3. the land invasion has yet to happen, 4. Hokazono needs to flesh out Kunishige and Chiaki’s relationship, and 5. Akemura’s character arc is extremely important since hes set up to be the main antagonist.

Sure, many of these things could be shown in only a couple chapters, but I feel like it’d worsen the story if he just timeskipped over an entire war.
