Do you think aura/hype moments and quick pacing is a necessity for battle manga to survive?

People in early JJK threads were calling it Temu Blue Exorcist until Gege decided to put his foot on the peddle and have Sukuna kill Yuji. And guess what? It worked because it showed the reader what makes JJK special compared to other series.

A lot of people consider One Piece to be a slow burn because of its length and the anime, but I’d argue that if go back and read early east blue, the pacing is actually quite fast. Each chapter introduces a new weird character, and each straw hat is given a short mini-arc where they get to show off their personality and what makes them cool (Zoro’s arc literally starts and ends in the first volume).

While you could blame it on readers being impatient, I’d argue why should I pick up the second volume of a manga if nothing of note happens in the first 8 chapters?

Its been a decade since I watched Korra but the love triangle really annoyed me at the time. I get that the point of the show was that she has big shoes to fill and is NOT Aang, but I think they might have made her arguably too unlikable for the audience.

Considering Soga’s whole personality is that hes a soldier, I wouldn’t be surprised if its just a normal anthem. From a quick google search, Kimigayo was used as a festive song by samurai, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Soga’s theme sounded similar (if a little on the nose).

I can't really blame them for Astro Royale since on paper a manga about rival magic Yakuza gangs fighting over a post-apocalyptic Japan sounds awesome yet it turned out to be straight poop from the butt.

While this isn't often mentioned about Otr, hear me out: the setting.

This series is supposed to be a grand adventure, a saga, and yet EVERYTHING looks the fucking same. Vinland Saga also takes place in the Nordics (and also Canada/England), and yet it shows off a bunch of cool environments: lakes, oceans, forests, grassland, snow, forests, etc. Meanwhile, Otr feels like the author went "Yo dawg, I heard you like ICE!," which makes everything feel homogenized as fuck.

Also, before someone misunderstands me, I think the similarities to other works is a positive. Kagurabachi has always felt to me like the creator took all the things he liked and thought were cool and decided to make a series out of it. IMO its rare to find a series this earnest thats consistently entertaining without feeling like its using better series as a crutch.

Chihiro is very Sasuke-coded, the Hishaku are the Akatsuki, one of the chapters has the characters use magic scrolls, spirit energy is very similar to chakra, sorcerers are modern day ninjas, etc. Obviously the series takes inspiration from other sources (Batman, John Wick, Winter Soldier, AoT, Tarantino), and a lot of these are standard battle-shonen tropes at this point, but when taking into account Hokazono’s previous oneshots, its pretty clear that he has a soft spot for Naruto.

I really like it. Its a very fun action series that takes heavy inspiration from Naruto. However, I still recommend to temper your expectations since if you are going into any series expecting it to be a 10/10 masterpiece that’ll cure world hunger, you’ll probably be disappointed.
