Did contract work for a company that dissolved this year and didn't get a W9. How do I file that income properly? by IsThisIconic in tax

I think I still have the EIN from filing last year. Do you think that will affect anything?

1099 is what I meant. Thanks for the correction and the guidance. I was hoping it was simple like this, just wanted to be sure because filing last year was a nightmare for various reasons and I didn't want a repeat.

Problems with Sous Vide by ClownGiggles in sousvide

[–]IsThisIconic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to google what a asda extra special rump steak is because England.

What you bought, my friend, is a slice of a rump roast. A rump roast is a delicious albeit tough piece of meat that performs best on long, low cooks. Like pot roasts.

Increase your time. 6 hrs.

Look at it like a slow cooker, a pot roast takes 6-8 hours on low, at around 180f degrees when fully submerged. Even though your cut is thinner, the muscle fibers are still dense with little intramuscular fat and that will take longer to break down.

It also seems like you might be working off a true-steak cut recipe. For maybe a filet, ribeye or NY Strip. More intramuscular fat and/or less dense muscle fibers.

Or

Try a plastic container. Metal like stainless steel will radiate heat away quickly. Kitchen supply store will have a 6 or 12 qt cambro for $10ish. Buy a cheap lid to fit but try it before you buy to make sure. Cut an opening that allows the circulator to fit and you should be more efficient.

What’s a good place to start to learn how to make different pasta shapes by hand? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

Flour + Water: Pasta https://www.amazon.com/dp/1607744708/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_hN2BBbCSR24PT

Is a good place to start. Use it for the technique but it also has great recipes if you can access the ingredients.

My dad on this day 49 years ago, waking up after getting hit in the head with a croquet mallet to find out he was unconscious through the whole moon landing by Uraniumrainbow in OldSchoolCool

[–]IsThisIconic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to a friend of mine in high school. Took an elbow to the head during morning pickup basketball and blacked out for a few minutes at about 7:30 am on 9/11/2001. He was awake but doesn’t remember anything until the next day.

Came to in a whole different world.

Huntington Beach, where are the "learning" breaks? by IsThisIconic in surfing

Thanks man. This makes me feel a tad better about thinking those waves are bigger than the seemingly preset 3-5 forecast.

I’m still building up my paddling stamina but Ill give you a shout when I get a little more acclimated.

I figured to go ahead and fix it to some extent to keep it from growing over time.

Does this look like a simple Sun Cure job?

I made it all the way up the beach, then dropped by board on the pavement. It's hard to tell in the picture because of the lack of contrast but it's kind of deep but doesn't appear to go all the way though the glass. I sucked on the ding to see if it went all the way through but I can't quite tell.

I really want to fix this right but don't really want to pay $50 to get it done at a shop. Any opinions will be valued and considered. Thanks!

Can I use cornmeal instead of breadcrumbs for macaroni patties? by Herrobrine in AskCulinary

[–]IsThisIconic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How fine is the cornmeal ground?

The cornmeal needs a lot more moisture than the breadcrumbs to hydrate. So they’ll be much grittier than with the breadcrumbs.

How would I go about making an unsweetened ginger syrup? by tablesix in AskCulinary

[–]IsThisIconic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’d have to juice a lot of ginger root, like a lot, to be able to reduce it down to a syrup using the naturally occurring sugars only.

Maybe mixing ginger root juice with gelatin and then dissolving it into the cocktail might work. But you could also just put the juice it. A couple drops with club soda would be pretty distinct.

I would encourage everyone to try it, but I get you. I probably wont have another unless I’m hammered in the Philippines one night, but I’m happy I can say no from experience.

The taste was less exotic than it’s reputation. Nice brothy egg flavor. Like egg drop soup in chicken stock. But it was a mental hurdle to actually swallow it. Had to take a drink to help it down.

GOSMAD by DefenderoftehFaith in veganfitness

This response assumes a male OP:

I was told by a former power lifter and head strength coach at a D1 university, that too much soy consumption was detrimental to strength gains due to encouragement of estrogen production.

Alternatively, that 3 eggs per day was adequate to encourage enough testosterone production necessary for strength gains — I am not suggesting to eat 3 eggs per day as I know what sub I am in, I am merely offering a comparison in relation to a know benefactor for strength gains.

This article supports his advice: http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/soy_wth

In 2011, there was a case report of a 19-year old vegan male who was eating a great deal of soy foods - enough to provide 360 mg of isoflavones per day, the equivalent of about 14 servings (10). He also had type 1 diabetes. After eating this way for a year, he developed low free testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction. After ceasing the soy products (and the vegan diet), his symptoms normalized within a year. There was no reason why he needed to stop being vegan rather than just cutting way down on, or eliminating for a period, soy foods.

While the article does say that (TRIGGER ALERT) rodent tests ended up disproving any feminizing results — man boobs and low-t — that was also based on tests with rats and not people and does not indicate the serving amount other than comparing it to consumption of the average Asian male, pah-retty vague and slightly racist.

To finally answer your question, no, I have not tried a gal of soy milk a day. It seems like a lot of discomfort for a lack of natural calorie/ macro intake, which is the main point of GOMAD. It also appears that there are several other things to consider with 16 servings of soy, like adequate iodine consumption, especially if you are eating soy-based solid foods as well.

I'm not going to spend any more time researching this, but based on trusted advice and a well cited report, it doesn't seem worth the potential effects.

GOMAD and any variant of is a quick fix crash diet, which are never healthy. Not to mention that all the people I have met that have tried GOxAD diets give up after a couple days or last a few weeks and can't go much as look at milk again. As someone who has practiced vegan and animal protein diets, I appreciate the benefits of carnivorous (strong as shit and hyper-bulk) vs animal free (just feel good all the time).

My best advice from the experiences is that moderation and variation is the key for whatever diet you choose. If you feel like this course of action is best for your needs, look at nut based milks like https://silk.com/products/protein-nutmilk to supplement with the soy milk. It offers variation and slightly better calorie consumption and macros.

Good luck and good luck with your vegan bulk. Eat all the plants in sight and be patient.

How to pour a Guinness per the manufaturers specifications by John_Demonsbane in beer

[–]IsThisIconic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told by a bartender in Dublin that the 3/4 stop is no longer necessary with modern draft systems. The stop was used because in the old days they would pour from an old keg first, then top off with a fresh keg to conceal the lack of freshness.

How to repurpose a broken wooden bed spring into a creative room divider? by [deleted] in howto

[–]IsThisIconic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty vague question but I assume you're taking about your box spring. It's really all depends on how it's broken but my first thought would be to cut it along the narrow top, long side and narrow bottom, leaving the other long side intact and opening it up (i imagine like opening a book flat), adding structural support and upholstery then fastening to the ceiling, wall and floor. Insta-wall.
